Actually, since you receive Paypal payment into the account and the manager queried this...it actually sounds like they may be thinking you are using a personal account for business.

As to what you can do (other than sit and stew) is nothing. They will release your account when they release it. However, you CAN make it perfectly clear that you'll be moving accounts just as soon as they do although I doubt they'll care much.

When you do get your access back, I would be very loudly and publically complaining in a branch on a Saturday morning about this. Might make you feel slightly better and get you a GWG into the bargain which you can go get a McDonalds with.

Would this lead to them closing ranks and put a "no-ops" on my account though? And surely they'd tell me this is what they are looking into.

It is making me feel like I have done something wrong when really I know I haven't but all the same, I feel constantly sick and have no money !!

My guess is 'yes' on the basis that the front line staff have no idea what is going on, only that it has been passed to the department that usually deals with irregularities. Because of the stupid laws, they'll all have been read the riot act on what happens if they breathe a word etc, so they're covering themselves. It's the same thing with DPA. Most of the time, DPA doesnt actually apply and there is information they can give you, but because the law is so damned convoluted and most people dont have the foggiest and because they are personally liable if they make a mistake....it's a 'jobs worths' charter.

Stop messing around with the branch.

Try ringing 08705 888 444 (card block team)
    Or
    0125 230 8047 (card fraud team)

Sounds from your 1st post it could be a simply security check on your card.
Branches get easily confused by stuff like this, as all they are really there for is to sell products.

But if it was this, wouldn't they tell me that rather than telling me nothing at all?

Also, surely I'd be able to go into branch with ID to withdraw money.
If its fraud related they will be under strict instructions not to discuss it. If your identity has been stolen then the bank wouldn't necessarily suspect this and at the moment may be assuming its you.

    Very good point!

If it was that they thought I was using a personal account for business would they really stop my account and not allow me to access my money though??

It is so frustrating that they won't tell me ANYTHING at all.

Yes, it happens. The next step you will know is that they will send you a letter telling you they are removing banking facilities and you have 30 days to settle up. Banks take a dim view of business being conducted via personal accounts although this definition really should move with the times. It is perfectly permissable for me to sell a few items of old clothing and I'm in no way conducting a business as such, and yet, this activity alone might cause red flags in the system.

Unfortunately, we have no more idea than you at the moment. All you can do is wait until they either unfreeze you or cancel the account at which time, you will know one way or the other.

  • Just had the same thing happen from NatWest this morning.

Confirmed all was fine yesterday, within O/D limit of £1k. This morning, O/D limit reduced to zero with no warning, and block on the account due to being over.

Two hours in the branch later (since they couldn't tell me anything over the phone), I'm none the wiser. CSM referred staff member to Collections, Collections to Business Collections, Business Collections back to CSM who said "all you can do is launch a complaint", which I did. Response awaited within 48 hours, "but we have a high number of complaints at present".

Now I'm getting the emails saying "your direct debit to X has been cancelled, please confirm revised details asap".

No letter in branch, no explanation, no issues with fraud or Paypal that I can see.

Morning wasted, and pretty distracted this afternoon to say the least.

I guess so. If you've been using a personal account for business purposes then you have broken the terms you agreed to when you opened your account.

If it was to do with running a business then Natwest would have told the OP, the only circumstance where they aren't allowed to mention why an account has been stopped is for suspicion of Money Laundering.
