Since you have a high ceiling, you could follow on couple I know.

Their community hall was decked out with strips of crepe paper (you know the sort of stuff that people used to use for christmas decorations) in colours that matched the bridal outfit. These were cut from hanks of the stuff bought at the wholesalers, pinned to the ceiling in the middle and at about 2.5m on the walls, to form a tent affect. You could use shades of blue, teal and white to form a "sky" and use uplighters on any light fittings?

You do not indicate which month but do you have time to plant annuals and get them in flower? Teal might be a challenge but white and green would be possible. You might get something close in cornflowers?

Depending on the time or year, and how close you are to countryside, large containers of flowering umbelliflors can look stunning (at a different friends' wedding). Cost nothing but had to be cut on the morning http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=st+anne's+lace&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=rK0sUdf7NZC00QX28YCIDw&sqi=2&ved=0CD8QsAQ&biw=1813&bih=899

Ivy is also free and abundant. We used it to decorate our marquees.

Speaking of marquees, we bought ours second hand and sold them on afterwards so they cost nothing. You still need somewhere to put them though.

The only thing i can think of is bunting? Use pinking sheers in stead of scissors and you should be able to make metres of it cheaply?

Are you looking for a Garden party look or a woodsy feel?

More of a garden party but I guess with a bit of influence from the book in regards to the hall door being covered in ivy that they have to go through to get in :)

I would not stick up any cloth sheeting that has not been approved with the correct fire rating, things can and do go wrong when people stick things on walls
    (see Brazilian nightclub fire)
All it needs to do is cause a stampede when some drunken fool puts a lighter to it.
Why not look at an LED lighting rig and coloured light the walls ?

Thats a good point.. if we are using leds would it be a problem though? Perhaps there is a fireproof spray that could sort it?

Its in October so not really time to plant but fortunately where I work has a really small garden center so I am able to do a temp loan on all plants :) There is nothing major but some nice ones

Im also thinking of sticking a old wooden garden swing in a corner for photos, something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Seater-Hard-Wood-Garden-Swing-Chair-/121072049309?pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenFurnitureR2_SM&hash=item1c3074dc9d but a bit closer to where I live (west wales)

These heart paperchains are really easy to make but look great

    http://www.daisygreenmagazine.co.uk/lifestyle-main/daisy-makes/make-a-paper-chain-this-valentines-day/

You don't need to use the size of paper mentioned in the instructions - you can make much bigger hearts too, you just need to make sure that all the pieces of paper are the same size.
  • OP, just a thought you could incorporate... Its easy to get hold of bunches of old fashioned iron keys (like in the book) and string them with ribbon or add them to centrepieces for decorative effect.

Fake heather can look very real and effective/pretty. Ivy HAS to be incorporated for that wild/overgrown look.
  • White sparkly tulle is inexpensive and you could wrap it around pillars to hide it. I like the idea of a painted sky on blue fabric - since you want a night-time theme you could have a navy sky with the moon and stars, and still do the white picket fence idea. You could also fill planters or half-barrels with mossy rocks. What about playing a CD with running water sounds (or if, you're really adventurous, rig up a stream using using assorted plastic tabs and crates carefully disguised and a pump for a fish pond!).

Get onto some American websites - they go to town for any sort of decoration and you might find it's cheaper to order from there. If you're going to do fairy lights, why not start asking your friends and family now if you can borrow their Christmas tree lights? Sounds like you'll need quite a lot so you probably want to start accumulating them soon!

I agree that cheap fabric can quickly & effectively decorate somewhere. This site has cheapish fabric, but more importantly, sells fire retardant fabric (cheapest is £4 a metre) and sprays: fabricuk.com
These guys are a bit cheaper, but you have to ring them for info about fire retardant: http://www.fabricland.co.uk/
I have used really cheap fabric from markets (50p a metre) but not in situations where fire might have been a concern.
