sorry you are partly right, the tory govt planned to increase vat on domestic fuel to 17.5% in april 1995 but in 1994 it was voted down in parliament

No, I'm not partly right John, I'm 100% right. Its okay to be wrong occasionally and not wriggle out of it, just accept it.

You posted the Tories introduced VAT on fuel at 15% and then 10%, that is simply 100% not true at all. Yes they did introduce it (due to EU law), but not at the rates you posted.

Don't confuse the standard rate of VAT (which was what the Tories were going to use for domestic fuel and was 17.5% at the time) with the reduced rate of VAT (which is what they went with in the end and was 8% and currently 5%).
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

Sometimes I think it's best not to poke a sleeping tiger: raising a petition to lower the VAT on fuel will probably give some bright spark in Whitehall the thought to "simplify" the system and raise it to the 20% we pay on everything else!!!

Yeah, VAT rates are only exciting when you can use them to slag off the Tories. Guess you'll have to invent something else, I hear Eric Pickles is partial to babies for breakfast :rotfl:

John, my job is VAT law, so for me, it is a very exciting subject and allows me to live a great life in the Swiss alps:cool:. I have advised governments on its implementation such as Africa and currently the GCC countries, who are looking to introduce VAT in next 3-4 years.....so whilst your life may be exciting, trust me, mine is just as exciting....even if the subject is the most boring in the world.

More importantly, its unfortunate that rather than just accept you were wrong, you choose to mock the person trying to show you some facts. Shame that, its always disappointing when people aren't open to listening.

And while you're busy Tory bashing please don't forget there were more Labour MPs fiddling their expenses than from any other party... four Labour MPs went to jail, but there were only two Tories went down, and they were peers ;)

They're all as bent as each other, all out to feather their own nests and sod all the rest of us. Euro MPs are the worst of the lot, with massive expenses allowances and all they appear to do is find new and novel ways of wasting vast amounts of money.

I'm reminded of the old joke: how do you know when a politician is lying? answer: their lips are moving.
