Not enough postage paid

why wouldn't it?
does the postal fairy take care of the charging, sorting, manual handling, accounting etc?
more of a question. why would you think it wouldnt cost more?
Well. Sorting and manual handling is no different.
Charging maybe but as you aren't charged for this service upfront if you go into a post office to get the correct postage amount I don't see why you should be charged if the postage is short at the end.
It's just a little money raiser for Royal Mail. Is there a document that justifies the cost? Last time you had one for customs charges? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

oh no no. machines sorting mail and manually dealing with charge items are very different things

I dont see you point. if you pay the correct postage then how could you pay for it at a Post Office?

feel free to dig through RMs FOI requests on what do they know
So are you now saying people should be charged the stamp price only?
if so,how to you propose to ensure anyone bothers with paying postage anymore?0 -

So you accept the handling fee is imposed as a penalty to punish customers who don't pay the correct postage? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

did I say that?
however you seem to think that charging 2nd class postage should cover everything
in which case those sending by 2nd class post are surely over paying massively?0 -

I didn't say that. I am querying the handling charge imposed on under paid postage items. I have no problem with the actual price of postage. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Then by default if that covers all associated costs with underpaid items.
those paying for their standard postage must be over paying
You're moving onto areas that I am not even arguing about!
1)You have an item where the postage cost is £1 and the customer pays the £1. The receiver is then out so the item is sent to the collection office. The item is then collected and no charge is added.
2)If the customer only paid 50p then on collection the receiver has to pay 50p plus an extra handling charge. It is this charge I am querying, not whether the price of postage is too much or too little. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. well it is pertinent
because the charge item has generated more work along its journey and at the delivery office0
