how would you have them tell you what it is?
Its simple, take the grey card and bin it

If its got a return address on the letter/parcel then that could be written on the card.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of these parcels/letters are just left. I imagine its low. Most people would want to know what it is, and the only way of finding out is by paying

Maybe if the sender put the correct postage on it then there would be no charge.

    Yes, that's pretty obvious

crazy talk. its obviously RMs fault
they should just deliver the item ;)

As a matter of interest why does it cost Royal Mail more to store and hand over an undercharged item as it does to store and hand over a parcel which was too big to go through the letter box?

One leads to this "handling charge" the other doesn't. I can't really see why one is more expensive to process than the other?

Because they have to go to the hassle of collecting the underpayment?
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

What hassle? The customer comes to the collection point with the card and money.

I suspect if they could get away with it Royal Mail would charge a handling fee on all parcel collections.

The cost of handling a parcel can be factored into the parcel prices.

There isn't any way to predict whether someone is going to put insufficient postage on and even if you could (perhaps using an average of historical data). Would you be prepared to pay more for postage to cover the costs of other people paying too little postage on items sent to other people ?

Assuming you were happy to do this, where would you set the cut off point? would you expect an item with no postage to go through the system? With half the postage? If not who pays for these and the accounting, banking and admin costs?

I don't think you have your argument much thought.

I'm not that bothered. I thought you might know

I misread this. I thought you suggested I ask the percentages of pick ups! Although in my experience RM will not tell you anything about the parcel/letter until you've paid. They are often bad seeds.

    No this makes no sense.

If postage charge takes in account the cost of handling the parcel including pick up if the customer is out. Then if the customer has underpaid all they need to be charged is the difference in price as this factors in the handling charge.
