Obscured view through wing mirror

Not sure if I should be posting here of the household cleaning forums, but the problem is on my car...

I've just had a new off-side wing mirror put on (last one knocked off by a Tonka toy) but it not only has a very thick, shiny adhesive label on it but underneath is a permanent marker with the make/model on. I've tried hot soap and water, Stardrops, nail varnish remover, soaked it with neat white spirit, but nothing is getting the sticker or the marker off. I can't think of anything stronger I can use, obviously don't want to damage the mirror so would be grateful for any suggestions that might help. Tia

  • Try a graffiti wipe don't know if there still about but handi graffiti wipe would shift anything
  • Go over it with a dry wipe marker.
  • Try WD-40?

Thank you. I have some WD 40 somewhere so will try that in the morning. (I recently saw a list of all the things WD 40 can be used for, if they all work everyone would have that and no other product under their sink!) Looked up graffiti wipes and they are still available so if the WD40 doesn't work I'll buy some of those. Not so sure about the dry wipe marker, there's enough on there to get rid of already and I want to be able to see through the mirror, not obscure it completely ;)
  • Trust me it works.

Before you damage something, just get a can of label remover from your local office stationary store or DIY store..... It's designed for this exact purpose.

Spray on, leave for a few seconds, peel label off..... Problem solved.

My old car, a Peugeot 306, had plastic headlamp units, the previous owner had stuck EU headlamp convertors on the lights and then clearly had a lot of trouble removing them, obviously tried everything including the kitchen scouring pad. Failed completely.....

I get the car, spray on some Ambersil label remover, wipe the sticky mess off and im left with perfectly smooth patches surrounded by scratch marks from the last owners attempts.

    Ambersil label remover

    Contains lighter fluid (naptha) 30 - 60% + petroleum distilates (lighter fluid) 10 - 30%. In other words, contains 40 - 90% lighter fluid.

Ambersil label remover, about £6. or 150ml lighter fluid, about £1.25.

Get a tin of ligher fluid - the best sticky label solvent in the world. As recommended by Ambersil :rotfl:

Thank you everyone. I now have a list of methods to try, will work through them (free ones first, it is a money saving site, after all!) and hopefully will get the mirror clean before it dissolves under so many chemicals :D
  • The mirror is glass, you won't damage it. Use a scraper (one of the sharp razor blade ones) and some elbow grease!
