BT Infinity Broadband not giving the speeds wirelessly

I'd back up the if the connection to the house is working fine, then as far as BT is concerned it's not really their problem message.
The lack of speed with the wireless could be down to any one of dozens of things, from the new router defaulting to a different wireless channel (which may get more interference from your neighbours, or even things like baby monitors).
It could even be the combination of the router and the specific wireless adaptor the op is using (IIRC there are some combinations that don't work well together), in which case using a different wireless adaptor might work.
Despite years of improvemens, millions spent on R&D wireless networking is still a bit of a black art when it comes to getting a reliable connection, as no single option tends to work everywhere, or reliably*.
As has been said, go for a wired x-box connection (always go for a wired connection when connection is important!**).
If you want to improve the wireless coverage, you can usually add a cheap router setup as an access point connected by a wire in an area where the signal from the main one is weak (IIRC you can get a suitable Belkin or TP-link router for that job from about a tenner, or even get a second hand one from ebay for pennies).
*I've recently bought a new £80+ cable router which is very good overall, but even though it's reported to have a very strong wireless signal compared to most models, it still has issues reaching parts of my house.
**It's annoying, but so much more reliable and easier to use long term.0 -
Hi All,
Thanks for the comments. I really think i need to contact BT again and see what other things they can advise. I find it incredibly strange for my xbox not to be picking up a better speed.
As stated above you dont need much speed in streaming video etc, but i'm paying for a supposedly better service than my original BT Broadband and there has been no change to the speed other than the ethernet attached laptop.
I have been through all the channels with BT and used INSSIDER to move my channel to the best possible. Along with learning my laptop would not be able to handle the speeds wirelessly (not really an issue with it being right next to the router). So i have at least ruled out a fair few things.
Perhaps i can get them to revert me back to normal broadband and return the equipment if they cant help improve it.0 -
I had BT Infinity installed a week today, I mainly get 35mb over wifi 74mb over Ethernet.
Homeplugs are generally slow anyway usually just to get the bandwidth one would need to stream OD stuff on youview or similar.
You could try changing the channel your router is broadcasting on, incase your on a busy channel where all your neighbours are using it too. There is a great android app Wifi analyser I think its called, it will show you what the best channel for you to select.
If you still have an old no longer needed BTHH or any router like a sky one or TT you could power it up, login to the webgui (eg 192.168.1.254) goto advanced settings, network and disable DHCP, this will now make the modem act as a wireless access point instead of a router, plug in Ethernet cable from BTHH3 and connect over wifi on your old modem.
Client <WIFI> OLDMODEM <ETHERNET> BTHH3
The IP and internet will come from the BTHH3 but wifi is broadcasted from your old modem
EDIT: also do you use P2P software? make sure you limit the upload speed you now offer. ADSL2+ is only like 1mb, BT infinity is 20MB, if your maxing out your upload speed you will have terrible speeds0 -

its not the hub at fault is your expectations at fault for a competent person with computers, you should never expect full speed from wifi
Thanks for nothing.
Your comments are extremly offensive and of no geniune help what so ever, please refrain from making any comments in future on any of my posts.0 -

Thanks, thats really interesting. Will give it a go at the weekend!0 -
No problem, if you need any help just send me a PM i'm sure I will pick it up quickly, there are factors some could argue that your too close to the modem.
I'm currently behind 3 brick internal walls with 2 doors. Using official BT equipment which is downstairs about 25m away and I just did a speed test on speedtest.net
6ms ping 36.55Mbps download 16.64Mbps
There may be other factors but if you have your original modem its a free way to prove its a faulty modem.0 -
@Sangunious
You say in post # 1 that you use your Xbox to stream TV and Films. Do you suffer interruptions to the streaming on it?
The reason I ask is that you said you had run speedtests through IE on the Xbox. Have you run the same speedtests on the Xbox IE with it connected by wired ethernet? What result did you get?
The Xbox is known to give poor/unreliable speedtest results using its IE browser. This is because it is routed through the Xbox Live servers and is possibly traffic managed.
It could in reality be that all you have is a slow wireless connection on your laptop.
Do you have any other wireless N devices that you could test with? Smartphone or tablet?604!0
