So you have money to buy an expensive mongrel but do not have money to pay for health care of your current dog that is unwell? And trying to find a way to fiddle with the insurance?

    Oh dear...

Hopefully I won't need to 'fiddle' but at least i will have the insurance in place if I do find she needs expensive surgery.

I know all these designer crossbreeds are not recognised as such at the moment, But where did all the dog breeds that we know now come from?
Dogs didn't originally come to this earth as Poodles, Labs, Collies etc, so it must have been through different types of dogs getting together for/ how whatever reason. It was probally because of people wanting different/better dogs that was around naturally.:)
A breed has to start somewhere

True, but many of these breeders of "Malshis", "Cockapoos" etc. are not trying to establish a new breed. They're not carefully selecting their starting lines, working with other breeders to establish solid F2, F3 etc. puppies to result in the breed 'breeding true' (when the physical and behavioural characteristics pass down in a predictable way..e.g. the litter always getting the non-shedding Poodle coat), it's often just a Poodle with a Lab or a Cocker or whatever other cross they want. As a result, you get a litter full of different physical and behavioural traits which are generally sold for an overinflated price due to a "designer" gimmick name.

I'm sure some are bred with good intentions but I'm sure those kind of breeders are happy to be scrutinised - I imagine they would rather be asked "too many" questions than not enough.
  • OMG out of all the stupid names I've seen recently for crossbred dogs .... that surely is the worst!

Please don't fuel BYB charging hundreds for crossbred dogs (absolutely nothing wrong with them .... they just shouldn't cost an arm & a leg as they're not recognised breeds - some are going for more than proper breeds!!!)

I weep at the mentally and fickleness of my fellow humans.

PudseyDB - was not taking the wotsit out of you, you rehomed a x-breed, but as soon as a lab and chihuahua get a trendy name the price is 10x. Just getting my apologies in upfront - I have a habit of "having loud opinions" :)

She's an old lady now so she's gone grey - but this is my labrador x chihuahua.

Basically the owner had a male chihuahua and didnt think it could possibly mate with their female black labrador.

A breed has to start somewhere

Simply because certain breds were developed for certain jobs

The spaniel was always used for hunting. Then slowly other the years some dogs were found to be better at some jobs then others so that traight was saught out and bred into the next generation. Ie from field spaniels we have the cocker, bred for getting into the low hedges without tearing themselves to pieces. But this was usually done by one breeder until the bred was perfected. Pups not as expectected were disposed off , killed or given as pets

Nowdays we have people with a !!!!!,not neutered, she gets caught and instead of the old days when pups were drowned, they are now seen as a money machine, ESP if they are given a daft name

It takes many many generations before a breed is recognised. The breeders who work hard to keep the breed standard rarely breed for the open market and their pups if there are any for sale command good prices

Non recognised breeds have had no breed checks as their is no breed standard. You could hand over £800 for a pup to find its a cripple before its 2 nd birthday

I know where I'd rather spend my money

And yes I have used emotive terms such as drowning, and believe me,it still goes on
