It depends on what your budget is. If money is not an issue for you, then perhaps an Ipad. The new ipad has great retina display and looks flawless. Would be great for skype. Around £420.

Does he like reading? You could look at a kindle fire ( a tad smaller). I won one of them at my work xmas party and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I think they come in around £150. Its great for browsing and so much more convenient for quick internet banking, than booting up my laptop.
    Total Mortgage OP £61,000
    Outstanding Mortgage £27,971
    Emergency Fund £62,100

Definately recommend the ipad - as grandaughter already has one they could use facetime which is like skype but already set up.

My mum got her first notebook at 78 proving it's never too late to learn. Her latest venture is using some translation programme so that she can write emails to her friends in france!

Price wise now probably Nexus 7 32 GB as value .
The pre Christmas discounts on the Tab and note 10.1 have gone making the Note 10.1 expensive at £400 compared to the pre Christmas cash back offer with £50 cb cost £268 .

Tesco usually have both models on display Android / Samsung and IPad .

  • Hi Jan,
One other thing you will need to consider is whether you need just a wi-fi model or one with 3g capability. If you have wireless internet at home and your hubby intends to use it mainly at home then wi-fi models will be ok. If you have no wireless internet at home then you will need a 3g model (more expensive) and a data only sim card.

I use a wi-fi only Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 which is great.

My Dad turns 70 next month and we are looking at a tablet for him. He has no internet or wi-fi at home so we need a 3g model. I'm seriously considering the Nexus 7 3g which is currently for sale at £235. This however is only a 7 inch tab not 10 inches.

    Hope this helps.

Do you have home broadband, if not then 3g tablet or wifi tablet and 3g travel / mifi router.

Samsung Tab 2 10.1 is £238 currently from an o2 store or the Galaxy note 10.1 is £318 again from o2 store.

Versus 10 inch about £170 from Currys or the Archos 10.1 at £160 from Currys.

To be honest the best thing you could do is to go into a store and have a go with one and see what he likes.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j
  • I'd say go for an ipad 2 or above.

My mum in her 80's has one and loves it. She is learning more and more on it everyday as it is so simple to use. She doesn't bother buying a paper now to read as she reads them on line. She loves to visit old haunts with street view. It is particularly good because we are a family spread out all over the country and everyone of us with an ipad, mac or ipod touch can face time with her. It really makes the family feel closer.
