I do not know if this will help anyone but I have travel insurance that includes all pre-existing conditions on proviso not travelling againg medical advice. Its a good option for me that I got via our work benefits page. So if you work for a large organisation have a look and see if anything is available. I work on the understanding that if I travel I need hospital letter anyway re meds etc all sorted nicely. At present don't feel fit to travel so not even trying.

One thing also to bear in mind and has happened to a few people I have contact with is if you don't have insurance or it is invalid because you have not declared a pre existing condition not only are your medical expenses not covered but also the cost of getting you home if you need to be air ambulanced out. A lot of people think the consulate will pay but they only help you to arrange. A typical air ambulance transfer will cost around £30,000 but can reach £100,000 and it has to be paid upfront.

The most tragic case I can think of is a young man in a scooter accident who is in a vegetative state. His mother is not fit to travel to him and as he had no insurance and she cannot afford to bring him home he will stay where he is (covered by reciprocal health agreement) until he passes away but with no one to visit.

A young girl in Tasmania was paralysed in an accident driving a quad bike which invalidated her insurance. She had no way of getting home until the Tasmanian government agreed to bear the expense.

Our local hospice is very good for up to date contacts for insurance with pre existing conditions.

Ooh, who does it online? I've always had to phone because of DH's and my 'oddities': he has more than 3 mild conditions and has had various investigations which have given him a clean bill of health ...

either that or we're rejected by online screening.

Hi Savvy_Sue, I found that only a few insurance companies asked me to ring up, on an expensive number, which I didn't  I was able to do an online quote with most of them. I usually just come on here & look for the best price & then go by whatever suites my needs. Although some wont insure me at all, or most will only insure me for a single trip. But I've had cancer thrice, so maybe it's different for each illness. Good luck, I'm still searching for a bargain.

try insure insureandgo there screening is done online, have found em useful in the past
  • I travelled to the US for three weeks two years ago and got insurance with Medici travel insurance, which cost about £80 including all my pre-existing conditions. The screening was done online but I did phone them once I had taken the policy out and discuss my conditions in greater detail. While I was away I had an allergic reaction, had to go to the ER and racked up $3100 in medical fees and prescriptions which I was reimbursed for in full (minus my £50 excess) two months later. They would have paid the hospital direct, but the hospital would only accept cash/card there and then. I would use them again.

    Hope this helps someone.

If you get a quote from All-clear, shop around before even considering it.

I remember vaguely last year getting a quote from them that was dearer than others, but tried again this year.

Listed OH's numerous conditions for on line quote from Goodtogo and was quoted £266. Put exactly the same info on All-clear site and the quote was over £500 for similar cover.
