My cat had a collar but wasn't given any painkillers at all afterwards. Didn't think they were normally given after a spaying?

Mine neither. It was done as a laparoscopic procedure, so no external stitches, but I don't know how much that impacts the pain levels.

LittleMiss had a course of antibiotics, but no pain meds, and was back to eating within 24 hours.

Hope you're both feeling more settled soon,

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but you cannot starve her until a new collar comes from some ebay seller! you will need to feed her something really tasty, tuna, chicken, whatever, take her collar off when you give it to her and keep an eye on her while she eats!

I don't think the OP is starving her cat! I think by now they've prolly take it off to see if her cat will eat at least something! Seriously, before accusing someone of starving their cat, read the whole damn thread, you can easily see the OP is not starving the cat. Shesh.

OP, got a spare small/premi babygro to hand? unless shes a scratcher, that would stop her licking the wound, but get one that fits properly, so she can't pull it off. Yes she will look daft, but it'll maybe do till you get the soft collar.

Still, as I am awaiting the new soft e-collar and she can't eat with this one, all I have managed to get down her so far are about 20 Dreamies (Beef Flavour, her favourite) she can't get her head into cat bowl and won't eat off my fingers, though she is still licking my fingers madly. I love her so much, breaking my heart all this :( just waiting on that soft collar from eBay[

So tell me how this is going to provide nutrition for this cat... she is waiting for this soft collar, but will end up with a weak and sick cat if she has no proper food for 48+ hours.

When we had our male cat done, he was glued up, no painkillers, in fact you would have never told he had been made a eunuch two hours earlier.

Our pup on the other hand was absolutely awful. They said the anaesthetic they gave him would work as a painkiller for 24 hours, but he seemed to be in real terrible pain/discomfort, lots of crying etc. We told the vets who offered to sell us some painkillers as it was apparently 'really weird.'

To be honest, I'm sure cats and dogs are a lot like humans, some have very high pain threshold, some low!

You sound very accusatory? are you implying that I will let me cat suffer undue hardship and lack of nutrition? I suggest you take your comments elsewhere, they are not welcome here. I don't have to explain anything to someone who obviously is making unfair comments with an accusatory tone. You're not wanting to offer help or advice, so go away

Thank You for defending me in my absence, that's very kind of you x

If you read my original post on this subject you will see that I offered advice, but you then went on to say that she'd only had a few cat treats while you waited for this new collar to arrive! My concern is more for your poor cat as you seem to think can't have the lampshade taken off at all for the next 10 days because your vet said so. I'm pretty sure that the vet didn't mean leave it on even if the cat couldn't eat!! You post that
taking it off simply wasn't an option to me as her recovery and safety is paramount

I've just spoken to the Vet this morning and the vet categorically stated that the collar must not come off as Molly is a licker and she must not lick her wound. I explained that all I had been able to feed her so far was Dreamies and then further things were discussed, which will be my next post. You'll find out all you need to know there as I will be posting an update.

So I was correct to post that I am unable to take the lampshade off as I was told not to by a qualified Vet.
  • I'm sorry if this offends you but you need to change your vet. I have never heard such twaddle in all my life. You cannot expect this poor animal to survive on cat treats for the number of days your vet has 'advised' you to keep the collar on. Its unacceptable and cruel.

You need to use common sense here and remove the collar for the 2-3 minutes the cat eats its food and then put the collar back on. You do not need to follow your vets advise to the letter and quiet frankly im shocked you arent using common sense here!

I hope your cat is feeling better but by the time this other collar arrives the stictches will be out and you will have wasted a fiver for nothing when a bit of common sense and taking the collar off for a couple of minutes will have been enough.

Licker or no licker she wont be interested in licking herself whilst she is eating and then once she has eaten you put the collar back on.

I hope she is feeling better and the stitches arent itching too much.
    Ant.
