Take up an instrument (perhaps drums), buy a hi-fi/speakers, do some loud DIY, take up the carpet and just have floor boards (wear heels at all times) Advertise his flat in local shops, Have a house party/ people over regularly, turn your phone volume up and call youself when your not in, have the loudest sex ever, pay some kids to play 'knock down ginger' on his door, buzzer etc lol

Oh yeah, and you think this will make things better? Idiot.

Usually Environmental Health can confiscate the noise making equipment (usually TVs, stereos etc), not sure what they would do though about confiscating a broom handle.

    BAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA :p
  • Sounds horrendous OP, at least there are two of you to support each other. The bottom line is that this gentleman does not appear to be reasonable (could be MH problems of some degree but the reason is a bit irrelevant) and therefore is unlikely to respond in a reasonable way. You could try noting all his encroachments into your life and see if EH/social services even are interested, you may get lucky.

Go about your normal lives making normal noise at reasonable times if the day. Other than that, good luck because you've been unlucky so far!

The issue here is that what is reasonable noise to some is intolerable to others. The best thing is to meet the person concerned on amicable terms and try to find out what the particular problem is - most of these things can be sorted out without a dispute. A cup of tea and a couple of rich tea biscuits can make all the difference.

Not entirely sure this is the case when the OP is being told complaints have been made about them thumping all night. Unless one of them has a sleepwalking (/sleephopping?) problem, all they're doing is sleeping, hardly intolerable noise.
  • Maybe your downstairs neighbour is actually hearing noises in the night but from their own flat and not yours.

For example, when we had boiler trouble at the beginning of last year when it had a case of corrosion and "explosive ignition", when it lit it would make thumping noises in the flu and pipes (which ran in the ceiling cavity above the bedroom as the boiler was not on an external wall) and initially before we knew of the issue with the boiler thought it might have come from our upstairs neighbours. It might be worth leaving a note suggesting he look at his heating system and see if that is the cause of the noise? Just an idea anyway.

I admit though his tactics of dealing with the situation are less than ideal!

I think the only thing to do is steal his doormat and have the loudest sex imaginable.

On a serious note, he is probably hearing something like the boiler as above. We had some absolutely awful neighbours with noise, and after sending the council round they finally stopped, but for weeks after when the boiler was clanking I had it in my head that it was the bass of dubstep.

  • OP - in your situation I would probably put the flat up for sale.

With a neighbour as difficult as yours (for whatever reason) you are unlikely to be able to improve the situation yourselves. If you bring in outside help, it will be time-consuming and will probably add more stress. And if you need/want to sell later, you will have to declare the issues with your neighbour.
  • I feel for you, noisy neighbors are a pain in the , I have a neighbor that has been doing his house up for over 18 months. So everyday (Most annoyingly) at around 6-7 PM when my kids are settling down for bed, including my 8 month old son he begins drilling and hammering. I always have to go around and he will then say ok I will just be 10 minutes.

I know the works got to be done, but it is just annoying.
