It only applies to social housing, it is not a tax it is a reduction in benefit. You live in a 3bed private let and you are only entitled to the 2bed rate which has been the case for years. If you can find a 3 bed house private rent that falls within the 2 bed rate then you won't have to top up your rent.

Can you define what you mean by social housing. I live in a house that is a private lett, it is rented from a private landlord, he has a mortgage on the property and I pay rent to cover the mortgage.

And sorry but you're wrong, either I haven't explained properly or you haven't picked me up right. I am only entitled to a 2 bedroom LHA rate, so I live in a 3 bedroom but I would get the exact same amount if I moved into a 2 bedroom, because under their eyes my children should share. So yes, as it stands, i've always had to pay more because im only entitled to a 2 bedroom LHA rate, and thats absolutely fine. But if they are only giving me a 2 bedrooom LHA rate, and im in a PRIVATE LETT, how can they take less off me for the 3rd bedroom?? They aren't giving me money for the 3rd bedroom anyway!?

Its all totally irrelevant, i'm not entitled to any housing benefit anymore so no point in discussing it. Plus my friend told me that this sounds like a mistake.Yes I should still get a reduction because im in a 3 bedroom, BUT, because I only get the allowance for a 2 bedroom, it doesn't fall into that category.

There's gratitude for the benefit system that helped you when you needed it and a success story for the new system!

    Sorry, let me re-phrase...

Thank you government for giving me £150 a month housing benefit for a £700 a month rent for 4 months, I will be eternally greatfull for the help you have given me. I've never claimed JSA or DSS benefits and i've only received 4 months of housing benefit my entire life.

I'm sure my high rate income tax will make up for the lack of gratitude and will be ALOT more than they've ever given me.

I bet your greatfull that people like me are paying tax so that you can use public services....oh wait?? Your not greatfull that your using my money - didn't think so, so why the heck should I be..........

No child benefit, no tax credits? (And from being eligible for LHA to earning over £42,000 pa - I doubt it!)

As for "people like me"? That'll be people paying a fair bit of income tax a month after paying rather more for 40 odd years!
  • When I increased my hours I applied for a different position (promotion) which has been accepted....so yes, I will be paying higher rate, although i'll give you that one, I haven't been up until now (just normal rate)

Are you greatful when your mum/gran/sister goes into hospital, are you greatful that it is provided free or are you one of those ones who moans about the waiting list?. Are you greatful that you have roads to drive on, or are you one of those people who moan about pot holes and roadworks? Are you greatful that your rubbish is collected once a fortnight or are you one of those people who moans that its not once a week anymore?

When you go to work and say to your colleague....roadworks on the street, stupid council made me late for work.....just think to yourself - GRATITUDE - you should be greatfull because you have been given something...the road to drive on. You aren't allowed to moan about the roadworks, because you were given the roads and you should be greatfull for that...(hmmmm)

All I am saying is that you rely on the system too, and Im sure you moan about things, and aren't entirely greatfull, you can lie right now and tell me the opposite, but dont waste your time because I wont believe you.

Chelle I am not being to be argumentative I just don't get your situation.

If you are private rented then you get the LHR allowance and the bedroom tax has nothing to do with you and your rent should not be increased.

Are you saying some landlords are now deciding to charge extra because they are using this as an excuse to make more money?
  • No.

Sorry, I think its probably the way i'm wording it that isn't making sense.

My landlord always charges £700 p/m, my actual rent hasn't went up.

I got a letter from my council saying my Housing Benefit was being reduced due to an extra bedroom.

And yes, I think your right and there has been a mistake, I shouldn't have been sent the letter about "benefit tax" or should I say reduced HB, because I didn't fall into the category, but im not sure if it was a mistake or not. I never phoned them, i'm not entitled any more, so never bothered.

I can take a photo of the letter and post it, if it helps anyone.

It does sound like an error and one that will throw people into huge panic.

Many are paying a lot of top up in Private Rental without having this kind of letter thrown at them!

Yes, post it up. It sounds like an error as not many people have to top-up their LHA when renting privately.
  • No problem, i'll post it tonight.

It depends what area you are in with regards to private lets...I live about 5 minutes from a city centre so my rent is sky high for the same house say 2 hours out of the city which would be around £200 cheaper.
