This article from About.com should answer your question.

I'm sorry, but the simple answer is no - they are no better than cigarettes. With rolling tobacco you take in more tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide and have more chance of contracting the mouth, throat and lung cancers.

As they say, the only "safe" cigarette is an unlit one.... ;)

Chewing tobacco or snuff is pretty pure tobacco and doesn't contain the chemicals that cigarettes contain but you tell this 17 year old that lost half his face that it makes it "safer". He might disagree....

    Dear JoeHel,

No this aticle doesn't really answer my question because it is about snuff inhalation. I just wanted to know if rolling baccy was more wholesome than factory made cigarettes which purportedly contain, as we all know, in excess of 4000 chemical additives.

By the well done for your great achievement, but I am finding if very difficult sometimes.

Why would Allen Carr's nose run with blood? I just don't understand that, I have known people that chainsmoke but have never seen blood pouring out their noses.

Although I am currently reading Allen Carr's book (as I bought it four years ago with lots of good intentions), I am starting to think it is largely typical American c**p!!! As I am sure a lot of you will agree, Americans are so over the top about things, sometimes it beggars belief. And of course Mr. Carr didn't make any money out of the book and his therapy centres, did he????? Aren't I the old cynic:beer:

I have no idea why he was getting nosebleeds when he smoked or even whether it was true... The point I meant was that I could read about someone else smoking until they had a nosebleed but I would STILL think I needed ciggies more than they did because they'd quit and were happy and I would NEVER QUIT AND STILL BE HAPPY!

    A More Natural Smoking Choice
People often think that smoking hand-rolled cigarettes is a "healthier" smoking choice, an attitude that is encouraged by tobacco advertising as well. While hand-rolled cigarettes don't contain the
thousands of chemical compounds regular cigarettes do, they're not a safe alternative either. The lack of a filter on this kind of cigarette means the smoker is inhaling more tar than with regular cigarettes.
It does seem to be healthier, the main risk seems to be more tar as theres no filter, but I always use filter tips, so they dont seem to contain all the chemicals

Sorry I know I must be getting very boring, but over lunch today OH and I were discussing smoking and I said that I honestly could not remember what it was like not to smoke because 36 years ago is a very long time and I just cannot remember being a non-smoker (excluding the past 17 days of course). It is quite a frightening thought really. I do sometimes wonder if I have already done any irreparable damage to my lungs and whether giving up now is just a waste of time. It's a shame that you can't get a chest x-ray if you are planning on stopping, just to doublecheck that it is actually worth the effort. OH said that after 16 years of not smoking he couldn't remember what it was like to be a smoker.

Thanks for that, but I always rolled mine in a little machine and used a filter. Does that mean my little guys were safer?

Sorry Melbury - I didn't put in the link to the article about rolling tobacco. It's here...

Thanks JoeHel, have now read that. I still don't think it really applies to me though because I always made my roll ups in a rolling machine with a filter put in. I couldn't smoke a cigarette without a filter, so what are they talking about in that article? I know lots of people on roll ups, but they always use filters.

He's British, I have his audio book,

Well cut my legs and call me shorty!!! I am totally gobsmacked, I was 110% sure he was an American - just the way the book reads I suppose, it sounds so American.

Thank you for that nirelandguy and PLEASE join us and give up. You know it makes sense.

    Hi melbury,

I'm an old cynic too
I found the books are hard to read as they as so repetitive; the actual facts would make a very small book however, and this has been over years, I suspect a lot of what he says is true.
I'm sure Allen Carr was made rich by his books & clinics but if it works for some people then it doesn't bother me, even if it hasn't worked for me.
