 Thanks folks, I find this thread quite entertaining in a funny ha, ha, sort of a way :rotfl: I smoked because I wanted to - it was a hobby, it was a psychological relaxation therapy that permitted me the right to take some 'time out' from what we know as the stresses of life. I couldn't afford to save all year and then set myself adrift on the Caribbean safe within the confines of a massive luxury cruiser, nor could I afford to buy a 'getaway' holiday home - not even a tent on a remote beach with a portaloo for company because then I'd need to fork out the costs of a car to get me there every time there was a holiday :rotfl: But I could afford to smoke, so I did, and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed that few minutes of sitting with a cuppa, puffing a cig, chatting about absolute nonsense and thinking of all the what if's. That is why I smoked. I don't do the lottery, I might add, as my way of thinking isn't impressed by forking out money everyweek on a 14,000,000 to 1 chance.

However, I think that the next most important thing is why I have now chosen NOT to smoke... :T

NYK HINTS & TIPS - NEVER take anything I say, suggest or type as offensive, as it is never meant that way. I just have a really, really, wacky sense of humour that some people just don't 'get'. Life should always have some fun, so let's have some fun :j

Now being a dentist you will know the answer to this, is it possible to offer to pay extra for a good tooth cleaning/whitening session? I would gladly pay extra to have all of the smoking residue removed from my teeth forever! Is it worth asking my dentist next time anyway?

No harm in asking, and I would say it was a good idea. Get rid of all the nicotine impregnated gunk that's built up below the gumline.

Does he have a hygienist? A session or two with her might well help.

They will probably look an awful lot better after that, but if you want to go the extra mile, then a whitening treatment will really get them sparkling again, and get rid of the ingrained nicotine. ( I'm assuming that the smoking hasn't done much harm to the support of your teeth yet - if it has, then I would get that sorted before spending money on the cosmetic jobs)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

NYK - I promise you I'm not offended by anything you write. On the contrary I honestly find your situation really interesting because it goes against a lot of things I've learned about smoking and quitting. That's the only reason I'm asking questions - I like to try and understand things and I'm afraid I always ask a lot of questions... :o

All that matters in the end is that you don't smoke any more because if it is just a relaxing hobby you're after there are a lot better ones out there that aren't as likely to kill you. Looks to me like you've got that quit sorted so, like you say, the rest is just chat and entertainment (and yes you do have a great sense of humour - that comes through loud and clear  ) I wish you all the luck in the world at sticking to your quit - just like all the others on this thread - because all that matters is people stop killing themselves and tobacco companies' profits go down. I truly believe that it is easy to quit and I'm just trying to pass on the information I've discovered which I'm hoping will help others find it easy too.

For some strange reason all I keep thinking about is 'what was the hit spin off series to American comedy program Soap'.
