The only one I disagree with slightly is No. 6. The second you extinguish your last ciggie you become an ex-smoker or non-smoker. You will always be an ADDICT.

Exactly, you'll always be an addict. As you stated, one ciggy once you've stopped and thats the end of that, more often than not.

I have given up lots of times in the past (longest for 1 year) but i always go back to it. The thing is - i really like smoking.

I am intrigued by that statement. As someone who has never given up for a year ... once you have rid your body of nicotine and you don't have that chemical dependence any more ... what does a ciggie "do" for you that makes it worth starting again?

I gave up nearly 2 months ago and I honestly can't imagine ANYTHING that could make me want to start again, but being forewarned is being forearmed and if there's something that will hit me a bit further down the line I'd love to know about it!

    Evening all!!

Melbury, BrickingIt & Deb, welcome to the thread

    Good luck to you all.

Deb, I thought I liked smoking too (and maybe sometimes I did) but then I wonder why I always wanted to stop, if I liked it so much why was I always thinking of quitting? The time will come that you think s0d it, I'm gonna quit (again) and maybe this time will be the time. We're all here for you :)

JoeHel, that vid was hilarious! I've never seen it before, thanks for giving us the link. Next time a bloke friend of mine is suffering with [strike]sniffles[/strike] man-flu I shall send it to them!!

Hope we're all well this evening?

Amazing achievement IDA you should be so proud of yourself. WELL DONE YOU!! One million percent agree that any ex-smoker is only one ciggie away from relapse and I will never again underestimate what nicotine can do. Not planning on ever giving it another chance to get me hooked though!

Once the physical addiction to nicotine has gone..at the most 3 weeks I think, it's the psychological problem we have to deal with. In times of stress etc we remember that having a ciggy 'helped' us cope (it didn't really, but thats part of the trap that keeps us smoking). We think there won't be a problem just having 1...cos we don't NEED them anymore. This can also happen if we're having a good time..we remember how smoking seemed to enhance the enjoyment of a situation...so we just have 1..same goes for relaxing etc etc etc. That 1, becomes 2 and before we know it we're right back to square 1.

I am speaking from experience! I gave up for 5 years, then went through an extremely stressful time and wanted something to help me cope...of course it didn't do that..and now 4 years on I'm right back to being totally addicted again.

So, now I have to give up AGAIN!! Last time was a nightmare for me, and I'm dreading it. I posted here a while ago of my intentions to give up and have been lurking eversince. Think I must try for 1st jan. I'm living alone for the first time in over 20 years, but I need to think about both my health and my lack of money!! I need to save for my future.
  • Hi antronella good luck to you - you know you've done it before you'll do it again with even more strength because you know you can!!
