Phone Choice Advice - G300 or Ace 2

My current contract is coming to an end and I am looking to make the leap to an Android phone. After some research I am stuck choosing between the Huawei G300 and the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2. The G300 is cheaper (around £80) while the Ace 2 looks more like £120-130 - I am thinking of buying the phone and then getting a Sim-only deal - don't want anymore 24 month contracts tying me in. The Ace 2 does seem slightly better to me spec-wise, especially with the upcoming Android Jelly bean update. Anybody have any opinion on the two?

Apparently you can get Ace 2 for £108 at p4u in-store as an upgrade on T-mobile.

The Samsung Ace 2 is quite a reasonable Android Phone.
I have one on my desk right now (along with several others)

Its no Galaxy S3 (or even close to a Galaxy S2) however the battery life is decent and, assuming you are also using the phone to make calls, it performs well in this area and call clarity is very clear.

To someone that is used to later Android OS versions, it does seem very old. I too have heard that its due an OS upgrade over the air sometime this year but I checked yesterday and its still not available.

My question would be that, after you have bought the phone, what is your ideal cost per month for a 30 day or 12 month SIM only deal.
How many minutes/texts and internet do you think you need.

£10/month on sim only could be all you need but post back what you think.
  • May I ask where you are getting the G300 from at that price? Is it a Vodafone return / open box?

Anyway, have you seen both side by side? The reason I ask is I started a similar thread re lumia's, when I saw them side by side, I preferred the lower spec'd one, just when I saw it in the flesh.

Anyway, I find this useful for comparing phones:

Looking at that I'd probably say the Ace 2, but I have seen the G300 and was impressed with the screen. My advice would be to try and seem the side by side, but that miught be hard with the G300, unless you know someone with one.

£80 is the Vodafone nearly new I think

But it seems to be available for £79 at very.co.uk for first time customers, and potentially even less if you go through TCB/Quidco.

  • Hmmm what to do, I was planning on getting a G300 just before xmas, decided I didn't need a new phone. When I looked at the start of the month they seem to be hard to come by. Was going to get windows phone, I may save some cash and go with with my orginial choice as the Very deal looks tempting.

I have a Galaxy Ace2 and have had no problems with it. I've had it since they first came out. I would say its been its one of the best phones I've had. There is nothing I don't like about it.

The Ascend is unbeatable value if you can get it from Very/Isme for about £70-75 using a voucher code, then a fiver to unlock it from Voda. But if not and you can get the Ace for around £100, the latter is probably the better buy.
I'm very happy with my Ascend, but it is a budget model and spec'd accordingly.

I have a G300 and it does all its asked daily for a virtual throwaway price.

I have not seen the Galaxy Ace 2 for less than about £150 on PAYG though so nearly double.

I have seen plenty of Galaxy Ace (NOT the 2) being sold still at £100-£120 so be sure of what your getting, the G300 is a better phone than the Ace (Zero? :D)

The Ace 2 does seem easy to get unlocked for £5 - £10 so no problem there.

If you can afford it and can get an Ace 2 for £100-£120 PAYG then go for that, if you can't get that price or afford it, get the G300, neither will disappoint.

  • Thanks for all the responses - as mije1983 said, the £80 for the G300 was "as new" from vodafone. I am thinking of a sim-only for about 200 minutes, and probably 500mb data. Not reaaly used android before, so guessing on data usage. Recently got a blackberry playbook,so may look into tethering it to phone when not in wifi area, so may affect my choice of Sim or contract - rules on tethering seem to vary greatly!

One of out phones is on the Giffgaff network and whilst mention of it stirs up lots of polarised debate!! our experience has been very good. The £10PCM 'goodybag' deal that can be set to auto renew like a contract but you can escape any time you like, unlike a contract. includes 250 mins, unlimited txts and 1GB per month with tethering permitted - would ensure your annual running cost is a steady £120. Runs on O2 network. Virgin and Tesco do good deals too.
