Not so Kwik Fit Fitters

Options
On Saturday 16th February 2013, my wife went to Kwik Fit Branch 189 at Orpington as a result of a slow puncture to her front drivers wheel. This was taken off and examined and told that it had a nail in it. The operative then promptly examined the rest of the tyres and told her that they all need replacing and because they were low profile he would do it for £400 which included a discount. He said they were illegal as they were five years old and worn. In fact the car was three years old and had been purchased from new and had only done 17,000 to top it all it had just had an MOT and sailed through. He then promptly said the front could be replaced at a price of £200. The car was an Hyundai I10 they do not have low profile tyres they are standard, there are no rules or regulations that state a tyre must be replaced at five years. We have subsequently taken the car to Hyundai that repaired the puncture £12.00 not £400 or £200, there appears to be a great need to get your operatives retrained they should not attempt to frighten and intimidate lone woman customers with the police or that their tyres are illegal just to drum up business. I and my family will not be using your company again and will be informing the rest of the family not to either. I would like to know what you intend to do about your operatives at that branch.

  • This is just standard fayre with these places, the trouble is many people trust the brand and keep getting their leg lifted as a result.

The people that continue to use these sorts of places, are the people who listen to the "well i've never had any trouble with them" crowd. People who don't watch programs like BBC watchdog, think the internet is all piracy and pedo's, probably only ever watch soaps on TV and obtain ALL their knowledge from glossy magazines and social gossip.

It no different to "road tax" pays for the roads and "Golfs are the most reliable cars", urban myths that will take decades to kill off.

  • Bit of a random thing to do wasn't it? - Just start a thread and post a load of blurb about Kwikfit addressed to us as you and your..

Perhaps you should have started with something like...
I've had some hassle with Kwik Fit lately, went in, had hassle over the tyres etc. I've written them a letter and thought I would share it with you all:

    <Your original post>

    What do you all think?

If you had done something like that, it would have made sense. As it is, you've posted a load of gibberish that looks as though you're accusing all the MSE members of being KwikFit and trying to rip you off. You've given no explanation at all, just started harping on about the awful service that we gave you. Thats just weird and whats weirder is that you only joined the forum to post that as if you seriously think that this is their customer service department.

I think your understanding of the world is slightly warped.
  • Kwickfit or slowfit as i like to call them just want your money as they have sales target to reach on a daily and weekly bases.

You can't get thicker than a kwik-fit fitter.

This one couldn't even come up with a plausible lie. 5 year old tyres on a car that's presumably on a 60 plate or thereabouts? Glad your wife didn't fall for it, though no doubt thousands of people still do.

Not defending them and i wouldnt use them..

But its quite possible the tyres on a 3 year old car are 5 years old. When i bought my current car i looked at a 2002 model that was actually built in 2000.

Odd these days when cars can be built and shipped and on the 1st owners driveways in a matter of weeks.

Also unless its a 4x4 most tyres fitted to cars are low profile. Standard profile is an 80. The sidewall is 80% of the tread width.

Even basic models have them these days. Your tyres are possible 165/60 x 14. So yes they are low profile. But should be fairly cheap still.

Its when you get 18" wheels and 40 profile or less things get rather expensive.

Glad you went elsewhere and didnt fall for it.
Word of mouth and the internet work wonders for customer service sometimes.

It's a Hyundai i10. There was a waiting list for those things back in 2009/2010 as the scrappage scheme was in full swing. It's highly unlikely that this car would have been sat on a forecourt doing nothing.
