Bedroom Tax and kids living away??

It is not unknown for people to believe that social housing is rent free, which of course it isn't. Rent free, and having full rent covered by housing benefit, are not the same thing.
There are a fair number of people who I know who get ALL OF THEIR RENT PAID FOR, and saunter off to the Council Offices to pay their nine quid "rent" when in fact it's their WATER money that the Council pays up front to their water board then gets back off the tenant.
That really, really pees me off when I'm standing their tipping over a hundred quid for the Council Tax which is going towards paying for their free rent:mad:0 -
I will just accept that anyone that refers to bedroom tax is a misinformed moron. (Or someone with a political agenda using misinformation to promote it). That is how I will deal with it.
Good for you, there's nothing like a sweeping generalisation to demonstrate how stubborn you are.0 -

It definitely isn't the same thing!
Council tenants who work or have an income pay full rent. The rent is cheaper than a private rent but they pay it in full. It is not subsidised from council tax.
Council tenants on benefits have all or part of their rent paid by the council, same as private tenants or people with mortgages who claim SMI.
Two completely different situations!
Not all social housing tenants pay water through their rent. Some do but then some private tenants do too.0 -
my rent isnt cheaper than a private let.
my 2 bed rent is £96 and the LHA 2 bed rate is £810 -
We oppose the #BedroomTax in principle and in detail, for all persons. This policy will cause social upheaval, hardship and make none of the savings it is designed to do. The solution for Britain's housing shortage lies in building more affordable housing. For us, this means 100,000 homes a year for rental through Council or Co-Operative Schemes.
To register our opposition to the #BedroomTax, at 1 pm on 16 March, people opposed to the #BedroomTax will be gathering in city centres in more than 30+ locations throughout the UK to protest against the policy. You can join us by following the links to any one of the #BedroomTax protests below. Note that 4 of the protests below (in blue) will be taking place on the 30 March.
Foster parents, cancer sufferers, carers, disabled persons, single parents and families with a recently bereaved member are some of the groups of people whom this policy hurts the most. The #BedroomTax should not apply to these groups of people and we are calling on the government to delay the policy by at least 1 year while they rethink a way to make the policy much fairer. We believe that if the government give this policy careful appraisal, they will conclude what we have, that it is wholly nonviable.
We think the policy should be wholly scrapped as social renters make five times better use of their space than owner occupiers, and it is unfair to tax bedrooms when 700,000+ houses lie empty.
If you wish to attend a protest, you can add your name to the attendance list by clicking on any of the locations below. If you have any queries you can email BedroomTax@Hotmail.com. The events are non-party political and organisers include people from Labour, Green Party, SNP, STUC, SWP and more.

Is it just me or are all these whining threads about the so called 'bedroom tax' just becoming a little tiresome now. There is a choice.....move home or pay your own rent! I'm sick of people on benefits moaning that the handouts aren't enough. Jeez...when I moved into my first rented home my in the late 80's my partner and I earnt just £100 a week each. We both worked, paid rent and claimed no benefits (we didn't even know there was such a thing as Housing Benefit!). We both had to pay separate travel costs to and from work, paid our bills, ate, etc. We managed....we never had luxuries such as flat screen tv's, sky, etc....but we damn well managed! People need to start prioritising!!0

my rent isnt cheaper than a private let.
my 2 bed rent is £96 and the LHA 2 bed rate is £81
That doesn't mean you could find a 2 bed property in your area for £81.
In my city I would never find a 3 bed private let at LHA rates. I have no idea where they get their figures from!
Families here are evicted from private rentals all the time because they can't afford the top up. Fighting the biggest battle of my life.Started 30th January 2018.

you can get 2 bed private lets here within the LHA rate, but they are rally dire ...
i was just making the point that social housing rents arent always cheaper than social lets.
there are plenty of (some quite nice) 2 bed lets that are lower than my rent ..... which is going up to £106 in april!
its awful than anyone cant afford to keep a roof over their heads because of cuts .... first to the private sector and now to the social sector.
expect an awful lot more evictions.... while the private landlords continue to rake in the cash!0 -

That will be why it is easier to get social housing in your area then.
I have no idea what my local LHA allowance is but I do know private rents are more expensive than social ones.0 -
i live in a mining village, that most seem to desert as soon as they possibly can. there is very little work here that will pay a decent wage.
we are in easy distance of the M! and i think developers thought they would be raking in the cash by building their new developments here.
but it isnt attracitve to homeowners either, as there are very few facilities for children.teenagers.
the council gave permission as they get a percentage of the properties for social housing.
in the past 8 years, there has been about 500 new houses built. all 2 and 3 bed ... maybe 1 or 2 4 bed.
the population of the towm is about 10,000... so a massive amount of building in proprtion to the population.
there have also been a fair number of HA properties built ( including mine) again all 2 and 3 bedroomed.
there is no shortage of housing. the rents of the private lets is probably lower now than it was 5 years ago, because the location isnt attractive to families.
but while there are no 1 bed properties, there are a large number of single people that are under occupying, with no alternative0
