Toxteth - bit of an issue now as it won't boot into Windows of any desciption. I might just have to restore from my last backup onto the new drive and copy any new stuff across.

    That should be fun!!

  • You should be able to boot into and run Windows back up from your Windows 7 Rescue CD.

Didn't know that, I'll give it a go over the weekend.
I'd do it tonight, but taking OH out for her birthday.

  • Not sure if the Win System Repair CD will allow you to create a new image, never tried it but I understand you already have an image to clone. My guess is you will probably run into the same issue.

Ah, I see what you mean. I have the original disc ..... somewhere.
I created the last image last month when everything was working fine so I should be able to restore that without too many issues.

Finally got my computer to boot up again. Apparently one of two files were missing/corrupt volmgr.sys and volmgrx.sys.
Replaced those from the install disc and everything appears to be working fine.

Now for my next issue, tried to do a windows backup and it won't back up to my extrenal drive as apparently it's not formatted as NTFS(?). There's a lot of stuff on there I don't want to lose so I'd be obliged if someone could give me some options?

Can I add a partition to the external HDD and format that correctly without losing what's on the other partition?

    ::edit::
Still can't get the filehippo update checker to work though (which is annoying).
I've uninstalled it, rebooted and reinstalled but it still says it has stopped working.

Anyone any ideas on that one?

the format shouldn't matter, just split the backup into 4gb chunks using the macrium interface.

Sounds like OP may not using Macrium but trying it with Windows Backup which possibly isn't file system agnostic.

I am, I'm trying the built-in Windows back-up routine to see if that works a bit better than the Macrium one. I'll retry the Macrium one bfore I go any further.

Just one oddity (I think) left.
When I boot now, I get two options for OS:-
    Windows 7
    Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered).

The system will only boot from the recovered one.
Any ideas how I can get rid of the other (if necessary)?

I'm seriously thinking it might be quicker to just reload the OS onto the new HDD and copy everything across (documents, etc) from my current drive and then reinstall all the programs.

if you've got two internal drives, and an external, image (not clone) the original drive using macrium to the external drive (or use the backup you did previously), create macrium boot cd, remove old drive, replace with new drive, boot from cd, restore from backup.

Assuming your original drive isn't faulty/corrupt, which you previous posts suggest may be possible if you are ignoring crc errors, the whole thing should take an hour or less. If the drive is faulty, whatever you try may not work

failing that, ditch the old drive, and reinstall windows.
