Hi, my sister has given me her old iPhone 3GS which has been unused for ages. She says it is unlocked I have put my t mobile sim in it but it comes up invalid sim can xanyone help me she was on orange. My old phone was an old nokia which I just used for calls and texts but useless for Internet so I changed my sim contract to full month for £16. Can anyone help me in plain English as I am clueless on the technical side of things I can access the Internet on the iPhone and my contacts are there but I can't make calls or texts? It says that firmware is 05.14.02 carrier not available version 4.1(8B117) if that's any help[STRIKE][/STRIKE]

You need to get your sister to ask her network for the unlock code

If that's not possible got to https://www.evasi0n.com and download the software to unlock it ( its a zero not a letter O )

You will probably have to get your sister to phone Orange and ask them to U/L it.
They will tell Apple and then when you plug it into iTunes, it will unlock it.
Alternatively, you could try and Jailbreak it and then unlock it yourself.
  • Thanks will get my sister to get unlock code but where do I put it when I get it as it is not asking me for an unlock code just says sim failure am using phone now for Internet but not for calls or texts. Not bright enough to try jailbreak? As don't have a clue what it is.probably should have stuck with my old nokia but thought I would like iPhone for Internet just for email and googling stuff no downloads or anything thanks for your help x

AFAIK, the only regular way of unlocking iPhones is via the network. They do this remotely without any codes and give you instructions what to do.
just says sim failure am using phone now for Internet but not for calls or texts.
Mobile internet or WiFi? If the former, the problem is not with the locking then.
  • Not sure Wi fi I think I have virgin wireless at home so I suppose my phone is using that (told you I was clueless!!) so does that mean that the phone is unlocked?
  • no its not unolcked just using your wifi connection at home

jailbreak with Evasi0n is easy , did it yesterday ;)

sim failure probably means its locked

take it the phone was never reported as lost or stolen in the past ??

  • No not lost/stolen it was her husbands old phone he gave it to her she unlocked it to use her orange sim but she has now got a iPhone 4s and this iPhone 3GS has been lying in her drawer for a few months so since she unlocked it to use it she assumed it would still be unlocked for me to use with my t mobile sim.

It can't "just use" it. At some point it had to have been connected to the router with the router password entered.

Nothing to do with wi-fi. The phone can be locked to any network and still connect to your VM wi-fi. 'Locked' means locked to the mobile network.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
