I met my lovely H2B and I realised that I did actually want a family. To have a slight chance to stay at home with my children we need to be debt free. We have a year until our wedding and we are paying every penny into paying off some (hopefully all) of our debt.

Like Tesuhoha I look at the amount of money going out of my account each month and think about what I could do with it if I got to spend/save it instead of paying off old debt.
Thanks for all the ideas you all post, changed house insurance yesterday and saved £150 a year! only wish I'd found the site sooner...

Hi, excellent question IA, I only got my lightbulb moment a couple of months ago when I stumbled across the MSE site quite by accident. It showed me that there are loads of other people in the same boat, but instead of just sitting in the boat getting carried along wherever the tide takes them (like we were doing), they are fighting against the tide and steering their own boat.

We got into this mess through credit cards, loans, overdrafts, consolidation,
then being stupid enough to start the whole process over again (and again).
Then I had a complete meltdown brought on by work related stress and walked out of my job fondly imagining that I would walk straight into another one. Well, of course that didn't happen, for a start I was actually ill but I couldn't see that at the time, so to cheer myself up I bought tons of "stuff" with money I didn't have. Although my DH struggled to keep things afloat we were trying to operate minus a salary (we weren't coping when we had two good salaries coming into the house) and the rest is obvious.

I'm hoping to be debt free in 3 years then I'm going to look seriously at being mortgage free. So, fingers crossed....

Just wanted to add good luck to everyone!!!

Because I want to keep my home, and I want to be able to sleep at night. The way I was going, spending more than I earn, I would have soon been in serious trouble. Now there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm not going to switch it off!

Pretty much just the same reason! W2B and I are getting married in 2008 and intend to start a family soon after. I realised that we'd be much better able to provide for a baby if I didn't have any unsecured debt, so now is the time to make a concerted effort to get rid of it.

I want to be debt free because I want to save money for a house and with my debt I can't do both. Once I am debt free I will begin on the property ladder.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Well, we've always "managed" thanks to a fair amount of credit card debt, the odd loan, etc. Never really hard up since early days together. Both were in reasonably well-paid jobs, although DH is now semi-retired, and we have no dependent children any more. Never an issue going on holidays - no problem with getting bigger loan or whatever to pay.....see the danger signals???
Anyway, I am due to retire within the next two years (and I don't want to go on working beyond that!) so need now to clear all debts. My lump sum is going to be used for maybe travel..who knows? - but NOT for paying off existing debts, they have to be gone by then!
That's why I'm on this site - loads of ideas and plenty of support. Have spent hours this past week reading your entire diary thread IA - and what an inspiration that's been! I really think you're brilliant!

I want to be debt free so I never run the risk of creditors being able to call in the whole debt or being declaired bankrupt. So I can say this is my house/car/dress and I paid for it.

I am a dfw because my spending got out of control I buried my head in the sand and it came back to bite me in the !!! big time!

I had a very poor childhood growing up in childrens homes so I think I overspent as a adult to make up for everything I never had,....

I want to be DF completely mortgage and all but at the moment i am trying to love my dreams and go see the world

I'm a DFW because I am absolutely sick to death of having to scrimp and scrape money together for things I really need, because I'm still paying for all the things I wanted and didn't need in the past.
