If they were (even) easier to get, they would be (even) more inundated than they currently are. There is simply not enough in the budget.

As for paying it back.....many don't pay it back at all, or only partially.

Fair enough. Its just, i know someone who has been disabled for 15 years and has been claiming benefits for that time and has never had a crisis loan. Then when they really needed one they got refused. that person would've been willing to pay it back quicker as well but it didn't make a difference.

If they had no food or Gas/elec, and no other avenue, they would not have been refused. If the Customer fits the crieria, it is granted.

Thankyou for everyones comments i too have never asked for a crisis loan either and really dont want to but have no other means of getting any money tommorrow, im not a scrounger or a greedy person and i really dont live beyond my means, just some money for food gas/electric to tide me over would help me enormously, i dont eat fancy food just normal everyday food.

The Government has introduced changes to Crisis Loans.

Receiving one, no matter how justified, is now extremely difficult!

Changes when? Because I remember it being a little complicated; but I don't remember it being difficult.
You will not be able to get a CL for bills, only for food and Gas/Elec only if they are on a card meter. They may well direct you to a food bank as stated previously. Hope you and your child are ok.

They won't pay out for bills; but if you spent your last money on a gas/electric bill then they seem to find that acceptable use of the funds.
You've been given all the questions pretty much so essentially they will look at what you need to buy food until the next money comes in (plus gas/electric if they're on a meter) then start deducting amounts for anything they consider you ought to be able to get/use yourself - e.g. Money still in your account food already in your house (they'll want you to be pretty specific), food bank, family etc. [*coughcough*]...but they only know what you tell them about these things... [/*coughcough*]
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I have always wondered why the DWP are so reluctant to give out crisis loans seeing as they have to be paid back.

There's a difference in money being repayable and actually being repaid. :(

There's a small fortune spent in administering the application (checking how realistic, how many times have they said their wallet was left in the phone box/on the bus, recalculating repayment rates because they've had so many etc) and the ongoing aspects of it - making the deductions, ensuring they're not left too short of money, having to re-do it all because they close their claim ( a tactic used for getting paid early) and then re-open it again etc etc.

Genuine and unavoidable situations leading to crisis loan applications are the minority - hence the changes.

Apply for the crisis loan and be completely upfront about your situation. They will be able to see your situation on their screens. They will ask you a round of questions about how you budget normally and what you have spent your last amount of money on.

You're able to call the crisis loan people from your mobile and the call is free. The money will be in your account the same day if you're successful. I secured one for my mother when she had to wait for two weeks for some money to come through while in hospital for a few months. She was awarded £40 to see her through which was enough for food. it did take arond 40 minutes as another poster has suggested. They then sent her a letter to confirm repayments taken directly from her pension.

Just like to say thankyou for all the people that gave me advice the past few days, i was successful in getting a crisis loan today, so i now how food for my son and gas and electric, it did take about 40 mins to complete as people said, and i got a nice lady on the other end of the phone as well, who didnt make you feel as though i was some sort of scrounger or something, however the jobcentre was a different story when i went to pick the giro up, a snootey lady that looked at me like i was a bit of dirt on her shoe, or that she had just given it to me out of her own purse, even though im paying it back.

    I'm really pleased for you.

Take no notice of the horrible person at the Job Centre.
You can now relax a little. Hope things work out for you.
