    It's a rubbish system.

I care for 2 disabled children and get 1 lot of Carers Allowance. So, double the work, one lot of money.

    It's s**t.

Well if you had to give up a well paid job to just get £58 per wk, you may think differently..........

I too love my husband , but you also need money to keep going.......I roughly care for my hubby 14 hrs per day 7 days per week, im "on duty " though 24/7.........

Doing all the nursing care, feeding, extra clothes washing, etc etc , that revolves around looking after a wheelchair bound person.........

Do I feel guilty about receiving £58 per week, ? like hell I do...........

I toolook after my husband although I don't claim CA for it. However, as I said earlier, most carers without an income will receive considerably more than $58 pw when the entire benefits package is taken into account.

Nobody should consider CA as a wage for caring but should look at the whole picture.

If my husband needed me to care for him I would give my well paid job up in a heartbeat, if I had one, I would not expect to be paid for it, even £58 a week, and lets face it, all the other benefits that go along with it, It isnt just £58 a week. Reckon up all the household income including all benefits and then come back and say the same thing.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Again, add up everything else that benefits the household,

Hardly double the work, I dont mean to sound unsympathetic but if you are cooking, its no more work to cook 2 meals than one.

    Household cleaning, same thing.

    Lets get it into perspective.

You don't say if they are your own children or not.

  • In my mind it is an additional allowance to a wage or other benefit. BUT of course if the carer had to give up a very well paid job there will be a big difference in income

I did give my well paid job up , I was definately better off working than being on CA, I done my figure work 4 years ago .........

But as my husband was too young as far as im concerned to go into nursing care ( 49 yrs old ) at time of stroke , I made the decision to give up work and look after him........

If we had still had a mortgage at that time , I would have had to carry on working to pay for it, but as we both had good incomes we were able to pay our mortgage off a few years back.....

He goes into respite nursing care for a week at a time ,to give me a break , and we do have to contribute some of our income to finance this, which we dont mind..........
  • FB BABY- no FIL didn't make a provisions as to what happens to BIL, we made the decision between us when FIL passed away. And yes FIL has property, but why is that even in question? Are we actually expected to sell FIL's home straight away just for the money? Cause thats not going to happen

At the end of the day it is not my responsibility nor my husbands, we made the decision because we are thoughtful people. we legally are not required to take care of him,but we are. I take it you never been in the position where you have to take care of a 26 year old who has the mental age of 2 years old. 24 hours a day - 7 days a week. And the only break you get is when your husband gets home from work, and with that break you're finally able to have a shower and relax a bit

Mind you, people always say they had to give up well paid jobs to be carers, it's almost as if no carers ever worked in minimum wage jobs previously.;)

`The underlying entitlement is actually what matters here.
