    If that first bidder had only bid say £50 the bid will show as 99p with the notice that 'reserve has not been met' .

    I remember bidding for some concert tickets and had bid over the start price, but below the reserve price, as it said "reserve not met" although it did say I was the winning bidder...just that if I won, then it was up to the seller as to whether or not they completed the transaction at that price. I didn't win the auction in the end and it went for more than the reserve price.
