Thank you so much for all the thoughtful suggestions, meat sounds like a winner, there's also a Waitrose where my mum lives so I could visit then, I think I've come round to spending vouchers on stuff that I can't necessarily get cheaper elsewhere.

Another idea not yet mentioned.. to buy up joints and other favourite cuts and fill the freezer. Plus some treats too ;)

This gets my vote. I would try to get as many whoopsie labels on meat, fish and poultry as possible, and freeze the lot immediately on getting home. Just check you have enough freezer space ;)

Make sure you get reduced stuff that's on offer as well. E.g. they do various types of meat/fish in a 3 for £10 mix and match offer, if you buy any three reduced it still takes the offer off. So if each bit of meat is £3.99 to start with, that would be £11.97, saving £1.97 with the £10 offer. If all three are reduced to £2.49, making a total of £7.47, the till still takes off £1.97 so you only pay £5.50. Hope that makes sense! Same goes with any other offers too.

Oh and get a myWaitrose card if you can (they have temporary ones in my local that you can use right away) cos they do some offers with that like 10% off various own brand products.

You are all so helpful, thank you very much. This is going to be great. :)
  • I had an unexpected windfall of £150 John Lewis vouchers a couple of years back. They lasted ages even though neither of us were working and we were skint. They were piece of mind tucked away in case an item needed replacing or a sale offer came up in July or January that was too good to miss. Don't forget their never knowingly undersold policy. As it happens I spent the last £25 over 18mths after receipt of them. I used them buying special offers in Waitrose especially clearance and reduced items, never buying unless things were half price or less so their value to me was well over £300. Admittedly I got the most enjoyment from dreaming of what to spend them on. Don't be in a hurry to spend them is my advice. Piece of mind in case tshtf financially is so reassuring.

Wow. Sorry to digress from the thread topic, but unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a Waitrose and I wonder can anyone tell me do M&S operate this way with reduced sticker items on their 3 for £10 meat mix and match offer?

Not 100% sure on this, but I do know that the yellow sticker items are never named on the till roll - they simply come up as 'reduced item' and the price. So it would seem that it probably wouldn't work.

This obviously only works if the reduced sticker has a proper printed barcode on it. If the price is handwritten and there's no barcode, you won't get the double reduction (they sometimes try to avoid people getting the double reduction by doing this)

Thank you very much for this, the 'never knowingly undersold' slogan is interesting isn't it? (And by interesting I mean hard to get my head around :))

Buy your normal shopping with a few luxuries added.
Check for offers and reduced items to make the money go further, bulk buy long life offers etc.
Also keep an eye open for potential gift to give through out the year, saving you money later.
