Does your Waitrose do online shopping and can you use the vouchers that way? Most places will give you change even if that is in the form of more vouchers so you could spend them slowly on good deals, I can't imagine John Lewis just saying 'tough' you lose everything you don't spend in one hit.

I don't know what you normally purchase but some of their free range meat is reasonably priced - corn fed or standard free range whole chicken roughly the same per kilo as Tesco, free range pork mince (actually lean) and even the organic pork mince (also lean) £1 to £2 a kilo LESS than Tesco regular lean pork mince! And obviously the meat comes on offer as anywhere.

Hi thank you, I need to check all those things, plus how far away they deliver, but it could be nice to combine a trip there with a day out, I think it's just over 10 miles away. Lovely old city for walking/shopping.

If you have a smartphone you could do a 'dummy run' shop on Mysupermarket or even on Waitrose Online, download the app then use that as your shopping list in store. That way you can see which are the best offers from store to store, if you are signed up everything stays in your trolley or basket indefinitely. I find it a lot easier comparing prices per kilo and the nutrition information with a separate tab for each supermarket rather than Mysupermarket but others may find the opposite.

To save on petrol costs, check whether Waitrose deliver to your area - free delivery if the order is over £50! Win win! :)

Their specials are, as far as I'm aware, often as good as or better than the other supermarkets. Definitely a good idea to check specials in advance on mysupermarket if it's a bit of a trip.

Obviously it's a gamble but their reductions really are fantastic, I got 4 Innocent veg pots for 2p each a couple of weeks back (a multibuy offer kicked in on top of the reductions), and have had fresh herbs, sausages, fresh chicken gravy, avocados, potatoes, mushrooms, peppers etc all at fantastic prices.

Perhaps you could have a day out with you kids and use some of the vouchers to get some bits for a picnic-style lunch; bread and then some cheese/ham off the deli, maybe a pastry or two and stock up on basics, good offers and any suitable reductions at the same time? Could easily do that twice.

Thanks Almo, I'm looking forward to those possibilities or similar now x we had some very happy times there when my kids were younger, sadly recent memories are painful.

What denomination are the vouchers? I would either spend the whole lot on something from John Lewis that I know is almost never reduced.

Or, if used on grocery shopping I would never use them on a weekly shop - it would be better once a month to select a few much more expensive items that I would not normally purchase and take £10 or £20 off to transform them into a 'regular' deal. Then you can have five or six very special weekends instead of just having them disintegrate into nothing via a normal shop.

Hi Nada666 thank you, I don't know yet, they're on their way. It must sound pretty stupid but I can't think of anything we need, I could think about kitchenware possibly but I want to declutter by selling loads of stuff and I'd be loathe to buy a big item just now I think. I do love your idea of transforming a shop over the weeks, but I do think I'm too far away from the store possibly for that. But your wise approach could also bring my shopping bills down in the long run. It's a nice thing to ponder!
  • Not sure where you live but if you check online you will see "waitrose food and home" stores. These are part waitrose and part John lewis. You can still get your free delivery if over £50 spent. You can also buy "home" goods ie bread maker etc. you can use your vouchers online by scratching the foil off but do not scratch if you intend to use in store as you will invalidate them. If you use less of your voucher in store they will give you the cash back in change. Ok. Hope that helps you.

Another idea not yet mentioned.. to buy up joints and other favourite cuts and fill the freezer. Plus some treats too ;)
