  • I make bread by hand but I understand you have to have a breadmaker to post on this forum. However, We do own one - hubby bought it tried it a few times and it wasn't very successful so it's sat in the larder ever since. Perhaps I'll get arthritis in my hands and it will be useful then.

That is not the case at all!:) I have neither a breadmaker nor a slow cooker and it has never stopped me from posting. You'll find a lot of people don't use breadmakers and we do have many threads about baking by hand which I do twice a week;)

Can you tell me do you buy strong white plain flour in LIDL.
I live in n.Ireland & all they stock is s/raising or plain & their own breadmixes.
If you can get strong flour would someone be kind enough to take a pic of bag so I can show LIDL here & maybe push them into ordering it in.
This is considering they sold breadmakers 3 weeks ago:rolleyes:
    Thanks
  • Hi. I never use shop bought bread any more. I have an ancient battered Bush Gourmet BM which churns out lovely bread regularly. I would love to make hand made bread but just know that I would never be organised enough to do it on a regular basis, so the BM does me fine. When my old BM finally gives up the ghost I will probably replace it with a Panny.

    Not got a breadmaker (yet)....

Why do you have to use STRONG WHITE FLOUR, why can't you use PLAIN WHITE FLOUR or SR WHITE FLOUR?

Also can you sub sugar for fake sugar?

And low fat spread for butter?

Strong bread flour has more gluten in it and it makes better bread. Plain flour works but the bread is not as good. SR flour does not work in the breadmaker. Sugar reacts with the yeast to make the bread rise so fake sugar won't do. You need fat in the bread so no point in substituting, Baking is scientific so better to follow the recipes that come with your bread maker before you experiment.

I have been so tempted to buy a bread maker many times - but have not taken the plung just yet.

I often see the flour in the shops - but the yeast looks expensive

Where does everyone get thier yeast - I have only see the sachets in the supermarket

    Thanks
