Can you tell me do you buy strong white plain flour in LIDL.
I live in n.Ireland & all they stock is s/raising or plain & their own breadmixes.
If you can get strong flour would someone be kind enough to take a pic of bag so I can show LIDL here & maybe push them into ordering it in.
This is considering they sold breadmakers 3 weeks ago:rolleyes:
Thanks
I did buy it - but it has jumped in price lately....Went up to 82p at one point, now seems to have settled at 75p for 1.5kg....but ASDA is 48p for the same size!
Don't have ability to take piccies at the moment, but it is in a beige/brown striped bag, and in our Lidl it is stocked next to the bread mixes! The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

Where does everyone get thier yeast - I have only see the sachets in the supermarket
Topaz
Hiya!
I've been buying ASDA own brand - you get 4 sachets in a pack for 50p and I seem to get an average of 2.5 loaves' worth per sachet, so that is about 10 loaves worth of yeast for 50p.
Once sachet opened, reseal with sellotape and keep it in the fridge!

Just out of interest.
We know 1.5 kg of flour for 48p can make 2kg of bread.
That is 24p for a kg. Added to that 5p for yeast.
Let say it costs 30p of ingredients for 1kg of bread.
How much would the gas /electricity costs for baking 1kg of bread?0 -
i hope this is classed as old style,
basicly ive been thinking about getting a breadmaker as we go through a loaf a day and a big bag of teacakes a week,
so where do i start,
ive found a cheap one through mse from littlewoods but i dont know what i need or how to etc
so if you wouldnt mind telling me the pros and cons of a breadmaker, and were a family of 4
thanks in advance0 -
I'm not sure I'd buy a cheap one but no doubt someone who owns the particular one you are looking at will be along.
I got a breadmaker just over a year ago when the Panasonic was on half price offer.
It's wonderful-the bread is better and healthier than shop bought as well as cheaper. I use mine for making teabreads and banana bread too. Quick, easy and makes the house smell wonderful.
Honestly it has no disadvantages-except damage to the hips !!I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I have a cheap breadmaker (Argos, Cookworks £25), but I dont use it to bake the bread just make the dough. I then take out the dough and cook it off in the oven, hubby prefers the texture of the oven cooked bread.
Absolutely worth the price paid, wouldn't be without one. Never buy bread, always make our own. It's also great for naan bread (much tastier than the shop bought naan's).
I have read that the Panasonic is the best if you are planning on baking your bread in the machine.0 -
I have a Morphy Richards Fastbake. I can't think of any cons to having a breadmaker, if you use it. They are a godsend for busy people and the bread tastes wonderful, as well as being cheaper.Life is not a dress rehearsal.0

My faithful Morphy Richards fastbake has just died on me after being overworked probably (never buy bread now!) and I've been loaned a cheap one while I save up. Both were excellent.
I think the advantages are that, once you have the 'building blocks' of breadmaking ingredients, you can spontaneously decide what you fancy - ie, french bread, crunchy rolls, baps, teacakes, fruit breads, italian herby bread/rolls, iced swiss crowns, doughnuts.... list is endless. We make them all!
So disadvantages, as said, hefty hips if indulge too much and the fact that the bread disappears quickly with my teenagers (after an intial 'i'm not eating that!' week of grumping).
I think some find the texture more heavy compared to shop bought bread, but mine turns out the same as the speciality bread texture. Love it!

Pizza dough, naan bread, loaves, breadstick, you name it. I wouldn't get a cheap BM. I have had cheap ones and taken them back mainly as they're not as non stick as they say they are. Look for one with a heavy pan.
If you like supermarket value loaf, then it probably isn't for you, but if you like the more 'artisan' style bread then don't hesitate. I have a Panasonic BTW"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"
