Have you asked them if you can take it to a local computer shop instead to get it independently inspected? They may go for this, or they may stick to their guns, especially if they think it may be a fraudulent claim.
If they don't go for it, your options are
1) Send them the laptop with the hard drive
2) Raise a formal complaint, allow them 8 weeks to reply (see if they change their mind), if they still won't allow you to keep the HDD, you can escalate to the FOS who will take 6-9 months minimum to review your claim - and there's every chance they'd agree with More-Than.
3) Withdraw the claim and deal with it yourself
Most computer shops are not qualified, or have any real clue about laptop hardware. If you want them to pay out, it needs to be complete after all would you mind them deducting a replacement cost of a drive from a settlement?Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
hi what was the outcome of your claim? I spilled tea on my Macbook too, and my insurance company have referred it to Bevalued (after instructing me to take it to Apple and get quotes to fix it!) who want to pick it up. My worry is that they'll repair it with shoddy parts, or try to replace it with something other than a Macbook. I've read some bad reviews about Bevalued so I'm worried0

Hi there,
Ask the Insurer to send the HD back to you after testing it. They should have no issue with this although they may ask you to pay the postage.
Also...do remember that the Insurer cannot dispose of an item unless they are writing it off and paying for a new one. So if, following the inspection, they reject your claim...they MUST send the laptop + HD back to you anyway.

I had an HP laptop I spilt tea on and claimed (can't remember repair company). Machine was written off and they sold my hard drive back to me in a cheap caddy for £60! Wasn't much on it that I didn't have copies of but I didn't fancy the idea of anyone else accessing my data.0

I was previously employed by IVAL who now trade under the name of Bevalued. Policy-holders who claim for an iPad that has been deemed as beyond economical repair are in fact receiving a refurbished unit and not an old for new replacement. Aviva are totally unaware of this unethical practice and are being ripped off by this company. A supervisor was fired for disclosing this information via email to an ex-employee and was payed hush money. In my opinion Aviva are a good insurance company, but the 3rd party company that they use as claims handlers for personal belongings are operating in an unethical way. It is time for Aviva and their policy-holders to be made aware of this unacceptable pratice.0
