I ordered a couple at Christmas and they stunk at first, personally not a smell I liked either. I just hung them in the cellar for a few days and the smell went.
No smell at all now and lovely sturdy bags!0 -

I've been using Seasalt jute bags for years, I hardly ever bother with a handbag these days. The smell will definitely disappear after a few days and the bags really do last.
And thank you geordie_lass for that code, something I wanted on the Seasalt website was out of stock when I placed my order on Monday, is now back again so will make use of that code
