  • my policy is 108 a month and was cancelled a week ago, they emailed me today after 6 emails which they ignored telling me that my insurance had been cancelled. I asked how much I will be billed for this and they told me they don't know. does anybody have a ballpark figure. iv only had the policy since September. thanks guys.
  • Please avoid at all circumstances. Quoted me £172 for a mere change of vehicle, not for BM or Jag but for a CORSA to similar one. I have got only 6 months left on the policy. I paid only £295 at the first place for a year worth of insurance. so for 6 months I am paying £320 odd pounds, unbelievable. When asked for cancellation they said I am only eligible for £100 for remaining 6 months, doesn't make sense at all. Service if awful never called after promising several times as they were very busy and had high volume of calls.

Its anybodies guess - I think I was hit with a £75 admin fee - plus cover for 3 weeks (yours will be 3 months of cover + admin fee)

  • Go Skippy, one of those bottom feeding insurers that require you send proof of your life history through the post before they insure you.

Car insurance is less to do with the value of the car you drive and more to do with the risk you pose and the risk of damage to your vehicle. So things like your postcode come into play (high/low crime neighbourhood), also your driving history and credit history.

If you can at all provide it (if you know you will keep the car for at least 12 months) pay upfront, instead of monthly - you will immediately save a few hundred. Paying monthly is the same as financing your insurance product, at a high APR. Your better off getting a 0% credit card, pay for the full insurance at the start and then pay off the credit card.

Finally, you can try and cancel with them and pay the admin fee to move to the new cheaper provider. Ifyou write and call repeatedly, claiming your unhappy with the extortionate charge, that you think it is unfair and if you mention the financial ombudsman might be getting involved, there is a slight chance they will waive the admin fee.

P.s MSE has a great article on cheap car insurance tricks, it is worth checking that.

If it has nothing to do with the make/model of car, then why did Admiral want to charge me £100 more when I changed my car, and that what was before the added the admin charge.

I clearly wrote: "car insurance is less to do with the value of the car". You misread that as "nothing to do with make/model"

The value of the car still plays a part in your insurance quote, more so with sportier brands (audi, beemer, mercs) than a £700 car, as that is what my response was to.

At the time I went from a 12 year old 206 to a 11 year old Punto. And still would have charged more when I went from the Punto (temp car) to a 12 year old Megane.

I thought you said it was an audi? now you say it was a Punto or a megane?

Well in anycase, at the time, the boss of some insurance company got a £100 added to their annual bonus :rotfl:

You cant beat insurance companies - their fees and calculations are not very transparent. Just ask one of their employees on the phone, the typical response is "the computer system creates the quote". What factors they use is completely up to them. But having worked around the country, I can tell you, the postcode is one of the more consistent ones. Live in the countryside and insure your car £400, insure the same car in central london £1200 - whats changed? Your age, driving history, credit history, the make? nope - just your postcode. Living in london, means more traffic, more chance of accidents, and possibly more chance of theft or damage to your car - hence the boost in price. Any number of factors play a part.

I read somewhere, that there is a survey that tracks which cars are more likely to be involved in theft - hence even 206 and meganes have price differences. Besides, theres things like alloys, CD players, cost of repair, cost of a new bumper, cost of engine and gearbox rebuilds to factor in. Some cars are just more expensive to fix/repair than others even if slight cheaper in the second hand market. And different companies use different data, so one company might think an engine rebuild for a megane is £500 another might calculate it to be £600.

Even switching like for like cars can see incremental changes in price. Go from an Audi A6 to a BMW 5 series, and you'll pay £40 more. Its all a bit of a mystery.
