  • I also would like to know what course she is on and what kind of tutor suggests a student drops the course for a low paid job (unless she wants to go into that industry).

I'd say get the qualifications out of the way first then she can do whatever she wants.

That's exactly what I was going to say - dropping out of a course is far more worrying than having her being away from home for a few months!

  • I would get her a phone card so she can ring home as often as she likes.

Find out what is available in the supermarkets locally and stock up on cosmetics and favourite items that aren't sold there, including treatment for the runs and dehydration. If you can't find this out, get her to send you a list of her requests and mail her a package of her favourite things when she has been there a week. She is likely to be wearing uniform most of the time, so perhaps advise her to only pack a few items of clothing.

Probably best not to take anything too valuable with her, they often share rooms in apartment blocks.

Give her an abundance of high factor sun cream and remind her that despite the high sun factor she will still brown so no need to go all out for a burn on the first few days, or fall asleep in the sun.

See if you can book up to have a holiday in the resort about a month or two in, most of the workers love to have a visit when they are settled in and the homesickness has been overcome.

Get her to drink lots of water, but not out of the tap, dehydration is a nightmare.

One important thing, remind her that she is in charge of children, and that it is incredibly important she is not hung over or under the influence of drink when looking after them.

You could also recommend that 50% of what she earns goes straight into a bank account here, that she can't be tempted to touch. That way she will have a nice pot of cash for when she returns to that all important college course.

Thank ypou so much for all your replies, they have helped settle my mind (a wee bit)
Re TV shows, I have never watched a single reality type show, so don't tell me the names of them!
She is just finishing off an NQ in Modelmaking for Film and TV and has applied for a place on the HND level course.
Her tutor feels there will be no problem securing a place, is actual advice is to ensure she gets a place for HND, then either defers entry or possibly could start course when season finishes and just work extra hard to 'catch up'
He didn't advise her to give up her course for a low paid job, sorry if I gave that impression, he feels the opportunity of living and working in another countr, even just for a season, is a fab 'life experience' opportunity.
Some great advice about drinking water, I forgot about that.
She won't be sunbathing unles smothered in factor 50, she has inherited our lovely creamy Celtic skin and red hair.
As I said, drink, drugs and unwise liaisons have been covered extensively.
As an ex-midwife, I may have put my children off for life with information overload, (especially STD's)!
I really appreciate everyone taking the time to give advice and share experiences. Thank you so much

I will guarantee one thing and one thing only..It will be the making of her..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
