Have used up all my antibiotics and not got my follow up appointment until 28/2
What should I do?
Phone your dentist - they should have an emergency number, alternatively your GP.0 -
Do not phone your gp , most gp practices specifically say they cannot treat toothache they do not have the facilities or expertise.
In England and Wales PCTs or lhbs have responsibility for providing nhs out of hours services, so phone nhs direct for details. If you are a private patient your dentist will provide an out of hours service.
Scotland and NI phone practice for details of out of hours service.0 -
I have no ideas if it's OK to give this advice and I will remove it if the mods think it's unwise.
In my experience by far the best painkiler for dental pain is codeine which is extremely good for that kind of acute immediate pain.
Very unwise to take it for more than a couple days as there may be a risk of addiction which has to be taken seriously. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

I had a wisdom tooth out under local last week, the procedure was a bit grim as my tooth was as stubborn as I am, and they had to slice the gum and drill the bone to get it out.
I didnt feel a thing and despite dire warnings of how much it would hurt once their drugs had worn off, it has been fine, couple of packs of neurofen alternated with paracetamol did me just fine, based on the dire warnings I did have something stronger in curtesy of a relative with cancer but they weren't needed.
As is often the case the fear of having the extraction was much worse than the reality. I now have Root canal surgery booked in for a months time.0 -

Was in a serious head on collision 5 years ago (drunk driver almost killed me and hubby) and I lost one tooth on right hand side. That has been going through the implant procedure last 10 months - finally got the dental implant 2 weeks ago. Having a tooth back is simply awesome! Gary did that and that procedure was not even half as bad as this root canal hell. The tooth next to it was damaged too, this is the one he is currently root canalling prior to replacing the broken crown on it. Then he has to fix the last tooth on right hand side, top of mouth as that was smashed too, corner broke off. That just needs filling he thinks but if it doesn't take, it will be crowned. I am so sick of the hell that crash caused my teeth. Worse than recovering from all the other hell I went through after that crash. Physical injuries all healed by 3 years, still working on repairing the teeth.
Infection in my tooth was so bad maybe that's why mine getting done in two batches and also why so much pain. He put me on antibiotics for week prior to root canal and still pain was there the morning of surgery.
I don't handle pain well as a drunk almost killed me in a crash and I developed quite severe PTSD which is still there even now, though now its just when I am fearing pain and death. That drunk has a lot to answer for
She ruined 3 of my teeth!
That sounds absolutely awful. I am terrified of doctors/hospitals following a horrendous experience so I can understand how you feel. I am considering a couple of implants so good to know they are not so bad. Hope you get it all done soon.0 -

Well, my implant cost me just shy of 2k in total and I have to say its been worth every penny. The worst bit was waiting the 4 months for the titanium screw (that screws into jawbone) to mesh with bone before tooth could be put on. The whole thing was initially terrifying but wanted a tooth back and no, it wasn't bad at all. Painless. The new tooth looks like my own and will last a lifetime if I be sure to continue looking after my gums etc. Worth every penny. I'd rather have the implant any day over the root canal- Go for it, well worth it x0
