I had root canal treatment a couple of months ago on one of my top teeth.
It took about 45 minutes so that gave me a bit of jaw ache but nothing major.

I stocked up with the strongest painkillers I could buy just to be prepared and can honestly say I did not even need a paracetamol afterwards.

This was my experience, too. A bit of jaw ache from being open for so long but otherwise no pain.

I had root canal work done a few years ago and to be honest the only discomfort I had was from having my mouth held wide open for so long - made my jaw ache :o As for the actual drilling, I don't remember feeling a thing.

Thanks Big Bird, feeling a bit better

Stop listening to horror stories, like labour pains and giving birth, every single experience is different.

Speak to your dentist first and explain how anxious you are. Honestly, part of his training will be to understand and help anxious payments.

    You will be fine,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I have had this done, it is not particularly pleasant like any dental treatment but I honestly did not feel anything. You will be completely numb. My dentist gives a bit of laughing gas as well if anyone is feeling particularly stressful, it relaxes you brilliantly, maybe yours will do that. Just let your dentist know how nervous you are and he should be able to help you. If you look hard enough you will always find horror stories, stop looking!

    Hope it goes well.

Thanks Gregg1. I shouldn't have looked, Google can tell you things you don't want to know

Take an ipod or your phone with some earphones - when I had mine done (which was much easier than I expected having also read the horror stories) it helped the time pass a lot quicker.
And you can wave your hand at them if there's an issue and they'll stop and find out what the problem is. You're not sitting there completely helpless while they get on with it.
    It'll be fine.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I have to leave now to travel to dentist, thanks to you all for your comments and I do feel a little better. Knowing you all had it done and its not that bad makes me feel more able to cope. I'll let you know later when I get back how it went. Thanks x

I didn't experience any pain with the 2 I had done. I explained I was scared and the dentist told me to raise my hand if at any point I wanted her to stop and explained everything as she went - they're used to people being scared and I'm sure they all know how to look after nervous people

I would say the build up of having it done is far worse than the actual experience of it - you'll be fine and it'll be over before you know it

  • To be honest I am not worried about afterwards, I have had this pain in this top tooth so long now I am used to it, almost preferable to getting the root treatment but if I don't I'll lose the tooth he said. 45 minutes, that is such a long time. No pain during it then?

They only thing I felt was when she injected the anaesthetic - but that's a tiny sting.
    After that nothing at all.

The dentist let me have little breaks when I needed to close my mouth for a few seconds while she got her stuff ready. She also told me to put my hand up if I felt anything and she would stop.

Maybe let your dentist know you will tell them if you need them to take a break. That way you are in control.

Think positive - you will be fine

  • They had radio two on, listening to Mr Vine go on about beef or lack of it.

Yes two next to each other, just drilled though found the nerves and pulled them out.

They then filed them down, put in the file and took xrays to make sure they got all the nerve out. Then put on a temp filling

It was one hour 4 minutes - not that I was counting

  • Don't worry too much I took my mum the dentist a fortnight ago she had two root canals done at the same time, she was numbed up and the next day she was fine, and tbh my mum doesn't handle pain well either. :)

    Be brave, good luck
