Terrified. Root canal at 12pm help?

I need some advice. I am having a total panic and fear situation here, I don't handle pain well. I am due to have a root canal treatment done on a top tooth at 12 today. I have just been reading terrible horror stories of how long it takes and the pain. Has anyone had it done and what was it like, please be honest. I am really scared :(

My husband had the same treatment a couple of days ago. I dosed him up on the strongest painkillers i could get from the pharmacy an hour before he went and he was ok.

Make sure you have eaten something before you go. Last time hubby had a bit of a reaction to the anaesthetic which the dentist said could have been because he hadnt eaten anything beforehand.

Just think, by tea time it will all be over.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I am scared senseless by any dentistry work due to very bad experiences as a child with my dentist. Even a filling see's me shaking and sweating before I go in. This has lead to me avoiding the dentist when younger so now needing lots of work on my teeth due to neglect.

I've now had 4 root canals done, and have to say that I have had no issues with any of them. I've always explained to the dentist that I'm scared, and please fill my mouth with pain killer and they have always been great about it. Once you know there will be no pain then it doesn't matter what they do does it?

The roots are deep so the drill to remove them is quite long and scary looking, but as long as there is no pain and the dentist talks you through it then for me personally it's a nicer experience than a filling.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

I have had this done, it is not particularly pleasant like any dental treatment but I honestly did not feel anything. You will be completely numb. My dentist gives a bit of laughing gas as well if anyone is feeling particularly stressful, it relaxes you brilliantly, maybe yours will do that. Just let your dentist know how nervous you are and he should be able to help you. If you look hard enough you will always find horror stories, stop looking!

    Hope it goes well.
  • I had two done last friday and to be honest it wasn't as bad as I feared.

Make sure you get some antibiotics just incase and also pain killers for next few days

    Try not to worry

  • Thanks Warehouse and Judi. I've just taken 2 ibuprofen Judi so hope that helps like it did your hubby. I am literally shaking. I am so looking forward to getting rid of the pain in this tooth but terrified as its a crowned tooth. Dentist says he will do the root canal through the crown then I will need the crown replacing. I guess I'm more worried as I thought he would remove the crown first but he insists not. I overreact to pain and am scared so bad I don't want to go but the pain the in the tooth was so bad he gave me a course of antibiotics last week, day 7 and they finish today. Pain is still there just milder, not as biting.
  • I had root canal treatment a couple of months ago on one of my top teeth.
It took about 45 minutes so that gave me a bit of jaw ache but nothing major.

I stocked up with the strongest painkillers I could buy just to be prepared and can honestly say I did not even need a paracetamol afterwards.

It's not as bad as you imagine.

I had root canal work done a few years ago and to be honest the only discomfort I had was from having my mouth held wide open for so long - made my jaw ache :o As for the actual drilling, I don't remember feeling a thing.

To be honest I am not worried about afterwards, I have had this pain in this top tooth so long now I am used to it, almost preferable to getting the root treatment but if I don't I'll lose the tooth he said. 45 minutes, that is such a long time. No pain during it then?
