Setting Up Windows 7 - updates etc

Okay, I have a new refurb PC to back this one up, but i'm having some issues.
It's Windows 7, i've never had Windows 7 before, but I was hoping most things would be the same, but I can't sort the following out:
Installing programs - Avast etc - I click on the program to install, it flashes up Avast and then nothing happens - it says in processes that it's running, but nothing is installing etc . I then tried AVG instead and it ran the installation but then it said 'connectivity issue' even though I am connected to the internet. I do wait a while, but nothing happens.
Windows validation checker is the same - I wanted to check this was genuine windows, I click on it, asks me to authorise access, I click yes....and nothing happens although it's in 'processes'. I now see that Microsft Security Essentials is installed which means it must be genuine windows as non genuine would mean it can't install this?
Windows updates - They just stall. I turned off windows update and turned it back on and it then downloaded them, but it stalls on 5% when installing. Has been at 5% for half an hour - Microsoft Frame Network 4 - should I download it manually from microsoft? Looking at the update history, the seller of the PC has tried many downloads of updates - alot of which have failed
Otherwise, the PC is great so far!
Thanks

If you' ve already got MSE installed, then you shouldn't attempt to install another AV program, as they will conflict. Decide which you want, uninstall the one you don't and reinstall the one you do.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I will leave MSE then as I can't install anything else anyway.
As long as MSE is enough.
Unfortunately I can't install anything else. I've tried the fixes and they won't work. Windows Installer is knackered.0 -
It can take hours (literally) to download and install updates - particularly on a new install of an 'old' installation disc. It is also just after a Tuesday update and release of Windows 8 - so the servers are probably very busy.
MSE should install regardless of validation.
You can try uninstalling some previous updates and then run Windows Update again. (type "Windows unins" in the search and choose "Uninstall a program")0 -
Thanks.
Downloads are fine, it's the installation that's the issue - no HDD flickering and avast and avg were just not installing at all - avast was literally flashing up and disappearing. I don't need them now as have MSE.
Will keep trying windows updates etc, but I fear I have a knackered installer and apparently you can't download it on windows 7 (and the refruber didn't include the windows 7 disc as promised!)0 -

Does it have a COA sticker for Windows 7 on the machine? If so, you can simply download the relevant disc.0 -

No, it's Windows XP on the sticker. Windows 7 has been installed on the machine by the person who refurbed it.
It's attempting to install 14 Windows Updates now - it's on 2 of 14 and the HDD light is working - here's hoping.
EDIT - After an sfc/scannow it's installing the windows updates. Maybe that has helped and/or I have an extremely slow processor! AMD Athlon x2 3800+0 -

So how it is activated, if without a COA? That's no good.
Let's see if it's a permanent solution, or if he has just installed a cracked copy of Windows 7.
Especially bad if he hasn't included a Recovery Disc.
Sending you a PM.0 -
It doesn't have a COA for Windows 7, but I can see the Windows Key in system.
Not had any reply from him regarding the Disc that was advertised to arrive with the PC.
Ok, thanks. I've downloaded the Windows Updates now, but it appears the ones I can't install are the .net Framework updates.
Not tried installing any other software. AVast and AVG it wouldn't allow or the windows genuine tool but it let me install CCleaner.
EDIT - Microsoft .net Framework 4 Client Profile - it gets about half way and then pauses, then rolls back and then just hangs and does nothing.0 -
