Not had an energy saving bulb blow ( have had to replace maybe 1 or 2 but not done that for at last 2 years. ) nor takes an age to light up the room, yes it does take maybe a minute for there to be decent light.
As someone else said, It probably is dodgy wiring, the amount of times the fuse has tripped because a lightbulb has blown....
But i'd rather spend 39p on a light thats bright instantly and lights up the corners of the room, than however much one of those energy saving ones are. In fairness, the energy saving one in the bathroom has lasted at least 2 years. But other rooms downstairs... blown at least once every 3 months.
Probably should check the wiring out :rotfl:0 -
£1.60 is cheap now! I live in a brand new flat with light fittings that only accept a particular type of low-energy bulb and the cheapest I've been able to find them is £5.50 each.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

From Wikipedia:-
Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use one-fifth to one-third the electric power,
And incandescent bulbs also give off heat which is why they are not as efficient at light production. This is often a usefull feature such as in unheated bathrooms/toilets.I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.0 -
I think the new LED light bulbs are the way to go but they are not cheap. Philips bayonet 8W (40W equivalent) are about £10-£15. There 75W equivalent is about £45 but only uses 17W and they got a new 13W coming.
Seen some bargains on ebay auctions for these though and spotlights. Want to get me some bargain spotlights for the kitchen!0 -
New homes *have* to be fitted with a proportion of fittings that can only accept low energy bulbs.
In my experience, these are a 13W CFL with a square plastic base and 4 connecting pins. The ballast is in the fitting.
Given the ease and cost of replacing these with a standard pendant, I can see many of them being swapped out if the bulbs are very expensive.
The best places for lower priced CFL bulbs are Ikea, Sainsburys and John Lewis. You also get cheap offers from time to time in Lidl & Aldi, but rarely from named-brand manufacturers.
Target prices: ~£2 each for 11w CFLs with a standard bulb cover, ~£1.50 for an 11w linear bulb, ~£3-4 each for higher wattage.0 -
The old type of light bulbs are still available on Amazon, I just bought 12 100watt bulbs for £4.95 free delivery as well.0

When I had incandescent bulbs, I seemed to be replacing a bulb somewhere at least once a month. It was a hassle.
Ever since I've had low energy bulbs it is much more like once per year. This implies they last around 12 times as long. And much less faff.
You can get low energy bulbs in different shapes and sizes, and ones that give out white light, daylight light or warm golden light.
They save you loads in electricity and they look much nicer than those harsh incandescent bulbs.
What's not to like?0 -

Is that for in the home? You could to pay a fortune in electricity running those.
Might look like a short term saving only spending a fiver but compared to energy saving variants you could end up paying another fiver or more on top of your bills every month.0 -

Horses for courses.
I use incandescent in a hall and a cupboard. Both places where I want full light immediately but the light never stays on for more than a couple of minutes. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
