£100 Ka Bangernomics

Options
I've been offered a 1999 1.3 Ford Ka for £100. it runs and has MOT until July I think and Tax until end of next month.

Problems with it is that the heater only works on number 4, passenger door only opens from the inside and it has a slow puncture on one tyre.

If it's a cheap fix could make a bit of money back on it.

    probably scraps at £150ish.
  • You wont make much back on it other than scrap value unless you sell as spares
  • avoid, these are rust buckets, check all the sills.

Slow puncture = swap over for spare.
Fan heater only works on setting 4 - My van only works on setting 3.
Door would be an MOT failure.

However, if you are intending to actually use it, then it would make a cheap run-around to just drive into the ground prior to scrapping it.

Heater is the resistor pack, look for the connector up inside passenger footwell where the heater is.
Replace the burnt out resistors with new ones, 15p from electrical suppliers, or source a pack from scrappers.
    Be happy...;)
  • It's from a mate who is out of work and has no use/need/afford it.

Wheels are alloy and not sure if original so not sure I could just switch the spare wheel. But I'll just look into getting a cheap part worn fitted from the many advertisers on the local Gumtree.

Not inspected car yet. Will go for a look this week sometime before I make my mind up.

It's just the passenger door I have doubts about.

The cheapest way to make money back on it would be to stick it on gumtree immediately and sell as is. Its got a bit of MOT so you could £295 it easily.

If its just to make money i personally would do nothing to it.

HOWEVER if you plan on running it a while then the heater is an easy fix as described above, the tyre probably just needs reseated on the beading, and the door handle is an easy fix and a common problem. You can get a handle off ebay for a few pounds and heres a link as to how to fit it

Come MOT i would say you could spend a fortune on suspension arms and welding so i would probably weigh it in. Take the battery out - worth £6 when weighed in separately - and take the alloys off. Strip the tyres off (by your local cheap tyre outlet), remove the weights and valve and weigh them in - worth £12-15 each.

Flog the tyres for a tenner each on gumtree.

The rest of it probably isnt worth stripping, but you could maybe get a few ££'s for the year parcel shelf on ebay, and for the CD player if it has one.

    What do you mean avoid??
  • I remember when this car first came out as a kid. It looked !!!! even when it was brand new. Now it just looks hopeless.

They rust like mad underneath thats what he means. They don't have any solidity or rust proofing, they just rot all over the place and very quickly.

The engines and boxes on them are fine but its everything else that is trouble.
