Sorry for sounding naive but what's a discretionary housing payment?
By the way thanks for the tip about income based. She certainly doesn't have anywhere near that amount in savings or assets.
When my dad walked out on her he took all of those with him and left her penniless. Nice chap eh?
Yeah she does get DLA, not sure if its high or low rate though, think it's high0 -

I have to agree with this.
There have been several stories on TV showing cases where severely disabled people are not being allowed their own bedroom.
Of course they can have their own bedroom.
The extra money can come from their very generous DLA payments.
I am not totally in favour of what is being done but I hate the way the media do not give the whole story.0 -
Can't post a link at the moment . Just google the words and the name of your local council to see what their policy is regarding the payments.
Basically extra HB to cover the shortfall.0 -
But what is the whole story? With respect? I am all for a better distribution of social housing but there are two really big points in my mind
1) many people have made them their home, their actual family home. Like my mother, she was denied the chance to buy her own bricks and mortar, and treats her home like a palace. Its immaculate and loved so much
2) It's all well and good saying that a family doesn't need an extra bedroom, but where is the house for them in the right area for schools or work, available. There's no movement within the market, unless the LA forcibly makes tenants swap houses. So in essence, the LA and govt doesn't care about filling bedrooms, just making money out of empty ones.0 -
but i thought the bedroom tax didnt apply to disabled people?!
AFAIK, unless the disabled person requires a non-resident overnight carer, then they cannot have an extra room included in their HB rate. Even properties that have been adapted are not exempt which I think is very shortsighted and uneconomic, not to say virtually anti-disabled in attitude.
I read a newspaper article today where a lady with a dwarfism syndrome who paid for her own adaptions herself without any grants, including lowering the height of her entre kitchen, who is affected by this.0 -
just wait til PIP comes in .... things will get better and better for many disabled peoplle.
with the bedroom tax ( dont siggest a private let, as even though there is ONE 1 bed private let in the market town that i live in ... security is EVERYTHING to most disabled people, as we are not in a position to probide our own security)
we a;so have to pay 20% of council tax, and the many face losing their DLA.
in my worst case scenario, i face the prospect of losing £60 a week ( out of £140)
and all because i have a disability.
never mind the people that CHOOSE not to work ( not the genuine unemployed job seeker) and people that CHOOSE to have 4 or more kids when they only have a 2 bed house.
theyre allowed to CHOOSE. but disabled people are allowed no choices at all0 -
Well it just ratifies the growing anti-disability feeling emanating from Westminster.
That Panorama programme summed it up, with those workers calling all ESA applicants thieving!0 -
