Valentines day isn't a rip off - best things in life are for free after all (and a pretty good way to express love) ;)

I'm with Browneyedbazzi, a practical gift would impress me more than a romantic one would.

my husband told me he'd bought me something small, black and very hot, I really thought he was using his imagination for once until I opened the gift, he bought me a four slice toaster!

Not quite the gift I was expecting, but better than the previous year, a jar of pickled onions and a jar of chilli peppers!

Martin clearly buys into Valentines day, judging by his appearance in the top LHS corner today!

You could argue the avatar's just a bit of fun, but surely it would have been more appropriate to have ignored it altogether rather than to provide a prompt, which IMO undermines the message that it's all a commercial wheeze.

Our anniversary is on the 4th February
    That was bad MSE planning.
Think of all the cut-price romantic stuff you could have bought each other as anniversary presents if it had been two or three weeks later...

I find there are quite a lot of men who say 'Valentines day is stupid, you should be romantic every day of the year, not just when clintons tell you too'.... and then aren't!!!

I like Valentines Day. Me and OH tell each other every day that we love each other and we often buy the other a little gift or a card and think it's nice on Valentines to buy each other a card and maybe a gift depending on how tight money is that year.

Sometimes we have gone out for a meal, sometimes we have gone away for the night and sometimes we cook a nice meal at home. If we go to a restaurant we will just go to a nice indian as that is our favourite food rather than somewhere that has a special menu for that night at a ridiculous price.

I don't understand people who celebrate Valentines but don't really show love and thoughtfullness other days though. I find it quite sad when you see so many couples in a restaurant on Valentines who spend the whole evening not talking or just saying things like "pass the salt".
