Help with new phone please!
Options
Hi
I just bought on ebay my new phone, £79 brand new, bargain!:-
Brand New Sony Ericsson W995 Slide Phone Walkman 8MP GPS 3G WiFi Unlocked Black 5055147541553 | eBay
I don't like touchscreen or Blackberry's qwerty keyboard, so if i want an internet phone, i'm limited so i got this as my girlfriend used to have one & its a little box of tricks, does everything, looks awesome & a great camera!
I just wanted to know a few things!
1. I know its not technically an android powered smartphone so no apps store, but does it have apps pre-loaded as shown here:-
Sony Ericsson W995 Review - YouTube
I think youtube is preloaded on it & Google maps. My girlfriends had SatNav too!
2. What is the best online store to get more apps from as i think its a bit iffy typing ones number into a site!
Maybe here:-
Free Sony Ericsson W995 Apps - mobile9
Any help/advice much appreciated

Getjar was one I sued to use when I was regular with my K850i0

Ok thanks & all the sites you showed are still working ok for Java phones?
Some people told me that you can't get Apps for this phone, even when brand new, but i remember when my girlfriend had it, you could access facebook 2 ways, one by typing in url in browser & also by clicking on an icon in Applications menu!
There were a list of them including SatNav & Google Maps & Youtube.
I shall be getting a sim only deal so will the shop be able to set up all the mms, sms, email etc?0 -
I went to Mobile 9, registered & it won't let me use the forums on there. It sends me an email address verification, which i click on the link to do & it says it doesn't support the url. I try copy & paste into browser & it goes to mobile 9 site & says site error!
DUTR the getjar site... do you just download an app file to pc then transfer to phone!? How is it done if so?0 -
I've had a few Sony phones in the past, all ran .jar files
You download them to your PC, then use the phone's transfer software to copy them across and install them
I presume it's this file: http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/software/phones/w995/
Did you get a USB cable with the phone? I suspect you'll need one0 -
The phone is on its way but am trying to find out how to get all this sorted before it comes!
Yes, i think it includes a usb cable.
Have you had the W995?, a few people say that apps arent available for this phone but i recall my gf's did.
I downloaded a few apps to my desktop that were JAD files & executable JAR files which i downloaded to my desktop.
When i get the phone & attach usb cable, what do i then do?0 -
Sorry, i had a Nokia E71 (a bit like a blackberry-styled Nokia) at the time the W995 came out. However, it looks quite similar to 'older' Sony handsets I had (Mid 2000s)
Apparently it comes with Google maps and Youtube apps.
So, when you get it, you'll need to install the CD-ROM, then read the manual! Sorry, i've not had a 'non-smartphone' phone since 2008!

This might be a good source of apps. You can even get whatsapp so you can talk to 'proper' phones0 -
What do you mean 'proper' , this is 3G with a good browser, fantastic camera, can send email & lots more stuff!
I know people who are still using phones that just call & text with a no camera!
CD-ROM, what is this for?
at www.getjar.com, don't i just click download on the site & it gives me a number to input ito the site on my phone & thats it!?
Like it says here:-

I've had phones that could email/web browse/use 3G and have a good camera since the mid-00s. I still don't think i'd count them as 'proper' smartphones. They just didn't have the umph.
There really is a world of difference between a Sony W995 and modern android handset. Heck, I was watching youtube videos i had downloaded in HD, onto my phone yesterday. At the click of a button they were then playing on my TV and the kids were dancing around to Gangan Style.
Yes, the Sony's had great cameras. Are you able to edit those photos on your phone? Can you post the photos to facebook/flickr/dropbox?
I do hope you enjoy your phone, and SE's are great handsets.. but the future is touchscreen devices.0 -
The reasons alone why i chose to get one of these is because i'm partly used to it as my gf had one & i played with it a lot, facebook, youtube & just for me, having internet on the bus is ace. We also took all our holiday snaps & videos with that phone & the satnav was ace & as it has duel headphone jacks, we often shared music.
Also that i hate tapping total glass screen phones & i've tried blackberry's & i can't use the keys.
I looked at the Nokia asha & that was my only option but i matched the specs & the sony came up better!
The future maybe touchscreen, but for me this is adequate, especially as the last 4 years i've been using a sagem my401v.
All in all, as long as i can get my apps from getjar easily & along with the ones the phone comes with i'll be ok.
Just a thing with getjar, apparently all i have to do is enter the app number into the website on my phone & thats it, i'm struggling to know why i need a cd?0
