The sugar refiners and producers have put a lot of scaremongering info out there for their own sakes, not ours.

Convesely, a lot of 'positive' research for sweeteners is sponsored by the sweetener industry - so look at both sides of the debate.

I avoid sweeteners as I don't like the taste, and they can give me a headache. My son was also sensitive to aspartame as a child and it had unpleasant side effects for him. Also, research has shown that sweeteners tricks the brain into expecting a sugar rush without there being any glucose in the blood, so it messes with your appetite and calorie control pathways.

    Please don't have sweeteners!

I ended up having to have a brain scan because of the symptoms they gave me!

Haven't touched them since, and feel great!

I also follow the 'Harcombe Diet' which doesn't allow sugar at all (apart from natural sugars in fruit).

Lost 3 stone so far.....1 to go - it's amazing!

    congratulations! well done!

My DD did the Harcombe diet and lost a lot of weight and felt marvellous - unfortunately a change in medication has caused her to put it all back on.
  • For me, sweeteners are the lesser of two evils. I've had a weight problem my whole adult life, and I'm now a slimming world member, and 3 1/2 stone lighter as a result. Since joining, I have used artificial sweeteners every day.

Would I prefer to use real sugar - yes. Would I like that 3 1/2 stone back - no. I wouldn't have lost the weight without the help of the sweeteners, and my weight was a far bigger risk to my health than possible, but IMO unproven risks from sweeteners.

  • Aspartame gives me migraines and makes me very sick plus I'm intolerant to corn products (so sweeteners and glucose made from corn sugar) so I gave up most processed foods over 20 years ago and felt hugely better for it.

I'm not a fan of things that are manufactured and I try to eat foods that are as natural as possible.

The comments about diabetes advice being to avoid sweeteners is interesting, my Dad is type two, he doesn't like artificially sweetened things and because I can't actually stop him eating cake and other sweet things he probably eats more sweet stuff than he ought to BUT it is mainly sugar based not sweeteners. His glucose levels are always better than they deserve to be given what he eats but perhaps because he eats natural foods? Who knows....I guess we'll know more in some years time but given smoking wasn't found to be harmful for years I'm happy going with my own view on sweeteners for now!

I've been using sweetners for over 10 years now with no effects. I wasn't aware they caused any harm at all. Mind you I take one sweetner in a mug of tea and I don't drink any fizzy drinks or juices. It kind of confused the quacks when I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic 8 years ago. They were even more taken aback when they told me to stop taking added salt on my food and I informed them I hadn't taken salt since the late 1970's.

Why all this fuss about sweetners all of a sudden?

Sorry to say but it's your sweeteners that are responsible for you becoming a Type 2 diabetic ;)

Have you had any recent blood tests?

What a nightmare trying to find a fruit squash without aspartame!

Even ones that were added sugar, had it in!

Ribena was my best option (the sugared one!) as it was on offer too!

Why use squash? why not real fruit juice watered down with, er, water?
to me it tastes better anyway! my grandkids like it with fizzy water and I think that does no harm, tho I would prefer them to have still water.

    That's an idea.

Would have to be careful which ones as can't drink anything too citrusy, but I guess I can give it a go - never even thought of it...:o:o
