Diabetes UK and NICE advise diabetics not to use sweeteners or anything labelled as "diabetic" because they cause spikes in blood sugar, and are overpriced.
They now advise you to use sugar in moderation such as in cakes and to avoid xylitol, malitol, sucralose etc.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

This is really interesting as I have been using sweeteners in my tea since starting weight watchers late last year. I drink alot of tea
so this was one of the first places to cut down on my sugar intake.
I had no idea about the effects of sweeteners until reading this, and having googled I'll be going back to sugar and trying to cut down. I have felt lousy lately, sluggish and have caught every bug going. I wonder if it's something to do with this.
I hope that going back to sugar will improve this, worth a try, so thank you very much xxx96 items decluttered so far in 20130 -

As I understand it, aspartame is the most dodgy sweetener to have, although there are claims that the small amounts we consume would not cause detrimental effects.
I have fibromyalgia and did without artificial sweeteners and other additives for three months a couple of years ago. Didn't make any difference to my symptoms but I did gain a stone and a half.
At the moment I am doing scottish slimmers and have lost three stone.:j I am using a small amount of products with aspartame and trying to use stevia or sucralose products instead.
Ideally, I'd like my diet to be entirely natural and without additives but I have to be realistic and for me, full sugar causes me to gain weight, and my obesity made me feel less well than being a bit lighter.0 -
i had the headaches too, think its natural (i drank a lot of fizzy juice) i am now enjoying fizzy water with a splash of high juice in stead (much less chemicals) i think its a case of moderation...i am not saying i wont ever have a diet coke again, but definately am not buying the low cal low fat high sweetner cereal/bars/yoghurts...i would either eat double what i should or raid the biscuit tin...they were not satisfying me at all.0

Sorry but this is incorrect. Alot of those products contain sugar as well as sweetner. It's the sugar that raises blood sugar levels and skews appetite not the sweetners. Any diabetic website will tell you this.
There's been years of research into sweetners and as yet there isn't any overwhelming evidence to suggest they are bad. Yes some people are sensitive, not many though. Question the source of the information you're getting. The sugar refiners and producers have put a lot of scaremongering info out there for their own sakes, not ours.
Do your own research, make sure it's from credible, independent sources. I'm not a fan of sweetners or processed food in general either but I am a fan of informed decisions.
And finally if you're not well see your GP0 -

ive recently been trying to diet slimming world without much sucsess will loose a bit then put it back on and not too overspend on food at the same time. i also have a lot of health problems .ive been reading a lot that sweetner is bad for you it can make you gain weight and also cause lots of health problems vertigo, migrains.fibromyalgia ect all of which i have ,i have sweetner in my coffees teas ect and on cereal also its in quiet a lot of diet foods cereal bars yogurts ect so ive decided to cut theses things out there by saving money as diet items are expensive and in the hope that it might make a difference to my health probs. just wonderd if anyone had tried this or if you think it might make a difference thanks in advance x
p.s i have lost 1 stone 3lbs .
:Ton your weightloss.
I've heard of the research and although not totally convinced I just have as little sweetener as possible. I think your idea of cooking from scratch is a good one for loads of reasons not just sweetener. You've been given great advice about how to cut back until you manage to give it up in your teas/coffees which is probably the best long-term solution. I do buy NAS Ribena and drink that hot to cut back on caffeine. What I do is just keep a few of those sachets (like you get in cafes) handy for adding to the odd recipe that needs a little.

Please don't have sweeteners!
I ended up having to have a brain scan because of the symptoms they gave me!
Haven't touched them since, and feel great!
I also follow the 'Harcombe Diet' which doesn't allow sugar at all (apart from natural sugars in fruit).
Lost 3 stone so far.....1 to go - it's amazing!Follower of 'The Harcombe Diet'.0
