There isn't a side access, so they would indeed have to have carried the turf through the flat!

So you will have the incovenience of gardeners and materials coming through your property.

  • how bizarre!!!!

when we moved into a house we bought some years ago, there was a note from the sellers saying 'we have left you a few light bulbs to start you off'. they had taken all of them except for 2!! couldnt believe it. even took the cup hooks that were screwed in under the kitchen cupboard.

do let us know how you get on.
  • There isn't a big hole in the middle of what used to be the lawn where they dug up their deceased dog, is there?

You know when I was a small lad and a turf wagon drove past our house my old dad would say to me by jesus son , one day we'll be rich enough to have our grass took away to be cut !

Its the way I tell em !
  • Maybe the three day trip the sellers said they were taking was actually the time they spent lifting the lawn and moving it away!

  • Presumably the OP will be back soon to tell us about their meeting with their own solicitor.

  • Hi all - just a quick update!

Spoken to my solicitor and have decided to just contact them (via my solicitor) before launching into any official legal action. She'll be contacting the sellers' solicitor with a written request for the full cost of replacing the lawn. Hopefully they'll pay up and it won't need to go any further, but I'll keep you all updated!

My parents went through the same 45 years ago. They moved into their new home early evening in the winter, only to discover the vendors had totally stripped the house, even taking lightbulbs and completely stripping the very large garden of every plant. They spent their first night using candles as 45 years ago shops didn't open late.

But here's the kicker - the vendors were their new neighbours. The house had a huge garden and the vendors were architects and had subdivided the garden and built themselves a new house and sold the original house to my parents.

Not really the best way to start out a neighbourly relationship.
  • Some people are so down right mean aren't they?! Your poor parents!

Do hope they pay up for the lawn and that you can now start to enjoy your new flat. Take solice from the fact you are a nicer person :D

Why on earth (excuse the pun) would you want to take a lawn? I guess it would save you money in the new place, but the hassle of removing it would surely be prohibitive (although clearly not in this instance!)

I often wonder what goes through peoples minds when selling a house.
given the sums and grief involved
small change(in the grand scheme) of some turf seems extreme
