Thanks for all the replies. Yes it is the Young Writers "competition" I understand that she may well not be the only child to have"won", I'm not naive enough to think that she was and thinking i've a literary genius on my hands

It states on the back of the copyright/order form that ordering is not a condition of publication and the book will be delivered by May 31st.
Hubby and I will have a chat about things and decide if we can justify forking out £15 + p&p but see no harm in giving permission for her story to be published.0 -
Just for information, I seem to remember being told that the British Library is what's called a copyright library and therefore will keep a copy of all books published in the UK.

We also had this once, dd came home telling me her piece of writing had won a competition and was going to be published. Lovely, only £10 to buy a copy. The cheek. And every child in the class 'won'.
I did not buy it and she copied out her writing which I got laminated and stuck on the wall. Job done.£608.98

Genuine competitions give the book away as part of the prize. I won a Scottish writing competition in high school and got a tour of a distillery (main sponsor) a book voucher and a copy of the book I was published in along with a certificate.
Being selected as a winner then having to buy your book with no other prize sounds like a scam.0 -
This morning I received a letter saying that her story was one of the winning entires and will be published in a book!:D
My sister recieved a similar letter about a story my nephew wrote. It turned out to be a scam. I hope whoever has contacted you is genuine and very well done to your daughter. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -

I can absolutely assure you the school gets nothing out of it! In fact we entered lots of students in very good faith in what sounds like the same thing (around the world in 80 words?) and we were also surprised when they all got published.0 -
Interesting article about this http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/mar/21/young-writers-competition0

I have looked on Amazon and the book is available for pre-order on there and is free p+p. I have also found out a few of her friends have been chosen too.
I spoke with my mum last night and she said that one of my cousins had something of hers published in this type of "competition".
Knowing all this, I am still as proud of my daughter as I was in the first place
