Extremely proud of my daughter.

A while ago, my eldest daughter age 10, had some homework which was part of a competition in which she had to write a creative piece of writing in just 80 words.
This morning I received a letter saying that her story was one of the winning entries and will be published in a book!:D
The school receives a complimentary copy and a copy will be sent to the British Library and further libraries across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
I am fit to burst with pride at the moment at her incredible achievement:)

Well done

As an aside, this isn't 'Young Writers' is it? It seems that is a bit of a con and I've seen complaints about them before.

Yes, I was just going to say that - my daughter had the same at that age and it wasn't until I heard most of her friends at school were being 'published' too that I realised what it was
I still paid an exorbitant amount for 3 copies though - one for us and one for each set of Grandparents

I hate to be negative about this but sometimes these sort of "competitions" can turn out to be just a money making scam. You get offered the chance to purchase a copy of the book, plus extra copies for friends and relatives. There will be several hundred "winners" in one single book so it can add up to quite a sum of money. And the book isn't an actual published one, in the sense that it goes on sale in the shops. The books are printed when the orders are collected, to match the numbers required. The worst bit about it is that many parents on lower incomes feel pressurised to buy copies of these books and they are expensive.
They did this a few years ago at my son's school, except it was a poetry competition. After a few complaints from parents the PTA investigated the competition and the whole thing was withdrawn. Our LEA has now banned these sort of competitions from their schools. I wish I could remember the exact name but it was a few years back. Vanity Press, says my OH? And about £16 per copy.
Of course I may be wrong and your DD's competition may be totally unrelated to my experiences but I do urge you to investigate further before you get too excited. Or sign up for anything.Val.0 -

Agree its likely to be a scam i recognised the poetry one and its a scam my partners nan fell for before xmas, didnt have the heart to tell her the £100+ for 8 books was in fact a clever little scam. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0
