Another one here who's daughter has won a prize for her poem which is to be published in a book. Along with most of her friends ! I ordered one book, thought it was extortionate at £17.99 but didn't have the heart to say no :)

Sorry OP, hope your bubble hasn't been burst !

I don't know much about self-publishing, but if a copy is being sent to the British Library, doesn't that imply that the book has its own ISBN number and is a proper published book?

Didn't want to put a bummer on the thread was just going to post the same thing as you pulliptears. Here's hoping its something all together something more than those young writers rip offs!

No, I understand and I did consider that carefully before I posted. I came to the conclusion that forewarned is forearmed and if this was a similar con it was better for her to know.
  • OP, I don't know if this is vanity publishing or not. In a lot of ways it doesn't really matter, as from your post your daughter has won a far greater competition, which will have even more benefits to her in life.

In a nutshell, she has won the competition to have a wonderful mum, who loves her, supports her, encourages her to feel proud of herself and is prepared to shout about her achievements from the rooftops!

All I can say is that if you keep it up, you will end up being very proud of your daughter, and she will end up being very proud of you!

You can buy ISBN numbers for private publications of just half a dozen copies of a book. The ISBN is just so that it's easy for booksellers to order copies and libraries to keep track of them.

Also sending copies to the British and other main Libraries means nothing. Does the British Library actually want a copy or want to keep it, after all?

There is a thread about Young Writers here (I knew I recalled one!)

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2304875

It does mention copies will be sent to the british library.

Personally if this is the case I think its horrible that a company can do this, these children much be so thrilled and they are well aware that most parents will buy the publication.
On one of the threads it was suggested to get your child to write out their poem, buy a nice frame and put it on the wall instead.
  • I'm quite suprised the school would allow this as homework if it's a well known scam.

It's not a scam as such, although morally I think it's a complete and utter disgrace. I'm guessing the school get something out of it as well, probably a portion of the sales of the books.

If that's the case i would be furious and the school would most certainly be getting an earful for further facilitating this 'competition'

I hope the OP comes back to clarify

Scam or not it doesnt take away from the sense of achievement felt by your DD I'm sure. She should be very proud of herself.

We had this just before Christmas. DD was being published and we could get 3 books for the price of 2 at £15.99 each. I said no to buying any of them because I thought it was a scam (as did MiL). We did buy a book (I think, it was right on Christmas so I forget. I was very cross about this because DD was very upset when I said I thought it was a scam.

It wasn't DD's entire school or class which was entered into this, she was attending an after school writing workshop but I would be very surprised if they didn't all "win" a place in the book.
