Waste not, want not. I'm for eating them.
All them times you've said you're so hungry you could eat a horse, now you're complaining about it

Neigh chance. Get in the bin.
We don't eat much processed food but I have two boxes of crispy beef pancakes in the freezer and I've been staring at them all day, I'm thinking do I take a chance?.

No, I don't think I will, even though it's not come up as a problem in that product.

Glad to hear that Morrissons are so strict on their checks, I love their meat and it has reinforced where I buy my meat from.

Yup, I already prepare the vast majority of my food from fresh ingredients and this whole saga convinces me that I should make that ALL from now on. Making one big lasagne, cooking, then freezing in individual portions takes more time and costs more than buying ready meals but it tastes better and I know what's in it.

Do you mince your own beef too? Otherwise how do you what's in the mince you buy?

It seems as though you have a fresh new scandal to report there. Please report the malpractice to protect the public. As you may know, the substance can cause a rare but sometimes fatal illness in humans so it would be a good social service to notify the FSA.

Bute use in horses not marked for human consumption is fine but vets should still be checking. I hope that anyone with a pet horse who is bothered by its potential sale for food would choose to have the passport say it's not for human consumption.

But one of the points the USPCA has been banging on about for two years is the useless horse passport scheme - so many of them are worth less than the paper they are printed on. click here

Morrissons aren't in N.Ireland.... unlike you who has wandered from Civvy St into the N.Ireland board.

Harsh, my friend. We're all in this together after all. Us Northern Ireland folk are meant to be friendly souls (most of the time, lol).

Good question jenheiffer. I'm glad you asked. :)

Many people don't seem to know that there are very different standards relating to traceability of fresh meat in NI and traceability of constituent ingredients of processed food.

Basically all fresh meat sold in NI must be traceable back to the farm where it is produced so consumers can have confidence in the quality of the product they are buying. Check the labels on fresh meat in the supermarket or ask your butcher.

There are however no such regulations relating to the individual ingredients in processed food. That is why it the focus of the FSA and DARD / DHSSPS officials is on that sector of the food industry - they are concentrating on where the risk lies.

If you buy locally produced meat from a reputable supplier (be that a supermarket or butcher) you will get what you pay for. I would avoid buying frozen mince as it may have been produced somewhere the NI traceability standards don't apply.

The USPCA is hardly a neutral party when it comes to slaughtering horses for meat but the remedy for such criminality in Ulster as well as the rest of the UK is for those who know of it to inform the authorities so action can be taken against the criminals.
