Lasagne

  • Neigh chance. Get in the bin.
Yup, I already prepare the vast majority of my food from fresh ingredients and this whole saga convinces me that I should make that ALL from now on. Making one big lasagne, cooking, then freezing in individual portions takes more time and costs more than buying ready meals but it tastes better and I know what's in it.

For me, I'd be looking for a refund, not that I'd have bought this particular item in the first place.
How can Findus or anyone else possibly tell us that there is no health risk when they don't know where the meat came from, nor how the animals were cared for or what veterinary treatment they had during life. They could, for all we know, have been treated with whatever drugs are banned and illegal in this country.
It's the welfare thing that gets me most, after all we expose ourselves to pollution, unhealthy food, alcohol etc etc quite willingly. Horses are intelligent, sentient animals. I deplore the thought of them being used as food but know that this is normal in other countries. However with any species it is not knowing how animals have been treated in their lives, and how they were treated coming up to their deaths that really makes me beware. There are some standards in UK abattoirs and on farms - these are better than nothing - but who knows what goes on abroad, and especially who knows what goes on when the source of the meat is connected with the criminal underworld.

  • I find it so strange that educated humans will believe what government, food manufacturers and vets say! Even horse's not marked for human consumption get Bute shoved into them around here, I don't know any horse owner that hasn't used it, it is passed from owner to owner like Asprin in humans! I've never had a vet ask me for a passport while treating a horse.. but there you go, believe what you will..

If you know what you are eating then its up to you,

It should be marked 100% beef, or 100% horsr meat, or whatever the case may be, and then you can decide if it is something you would eat or not

But if it is horse meat, then there is no way you should be charged beef prices for it!

I can see this story hanging around for a very long time, look at how it has snowballed in this past week, it started out as "traces of horse dna found".. Now its "100% horse meat"!

It seems as though you have a fresh new scandal to report there. Please report the malpractice to protect the public. As you may know, the substance can cause a rare but sometimes fatal illness in humans so it would be a good social service to notify the FSA.

Bute use in horses not marked for human consumption is fine but vets should still be checking. I hope that anyone with a pet horse who is bothered by its potential sale for food would choose to have the passport say it's not for human consumption.
